5Y3WGTB rectifier,
« on: 16 Mar 2009, 11:31 pm »

I have been experimenting with rectifiers in my Cornet 2. After using very good GE and Amperex 5AR4 which gave ~362V B+, I found a number of NOS 5Y3WGTB, a 5Y3-type rectifier that is indirectly heated, for slow warm-up like the 5AR4. Well, I wanted to buy 2 but had to get all 8. They sound very good, and test well. But I can't undertand how the lower voltage, 338V at B+, can still sound "better".  There was some discussion of rectifiers in another thread.

Either way, I have 6 extras if anyone wants one or 2. I just want to get back what I have in them, $15 apiece. Sorry, If I am breaking a posting rule by bringing this up, I will delete the post.  :nono: Contact me off list. They are CBS Hytron (brown base, black plates) from the late 50's.  (EDIT: all tubes are spoken for)

Any thoughts on ths rectifier?

Pete

Hey Pete, I just sent you a PM regarding the CBS tubes.

Hi Pete,
They look very much like the GE 5 Star 6087/5Y3WGTB rectifier that I am using. Mine is dated 35th week of 1959. Plate structure and rectangular getter appear identical, at least from what I can tell in the pictures! I have a 25-30 second warm-up from red to green.

I need to retest my B+ as it was a bit low (-10% about 332VDC) when I first powered the C2 up and measured the test points.  But perhaps that is a characteristic of the 5Y3WGTB?

I like the sound of the GE 6087/5Y3WGTB , but haven't compared it to other rectifiers in the circuit.

Cheers,
Geary

Pete just a thought, is there an EIA 3 number manufacturer's code on the tube? CBS Hytron is 210, GE 188.

Yikes! I had no idea the tubes would all vanish in an hour. My apologies to those I had to turn down.

Actually there is no manuf code. One has a date code of 1959, others a code of 'PG'.  They do look like some 5-star GE's I once had.  5Y3 always has more voltage drop than 5AR4. Not sure how the specified 5Y3 (for C2) ever made the 365V B+ printed on the circuit board.

Hi Pete,

Try a Sovtek and it will.  The Sovtek 5Y3GT is in my opinion, a rebranded 5AR4.
