Wayner,

You certainly have your own opinions about power cords and isolation and who knows what else.  But just because you can't hear a difference something makes, doesn't mean others can't.  This shouldn't come as surprise to you or anyone else who holds your views.

I place 12" bicycle inner tubes with just a few lbs. of air underneath all components. Around $3.00 ea. at Walmart. No point in spending much more on this kind of "tweaking" if you ask me.

Why not go with something more colorful, though.

How about one of those inflatable ring cushions?

I hate to think of what that was used for (reducing pain in a certain area)........

I dunno.  A cutting board costs what?  $30-$50?  It's hard to begrudge somebody a $30 tweek.

The problem with tweeks is when folks don't actually think about what they're trying to accomplish and whether the laws of physics makes something even possible.  Plus, chasing down psychoacousical improvements is an awful lot easier than tackling big issues, like room acoustics.

But really, I have little issue with folks who try to minimize the amount of vibration picked up by their gear.  If that involves using cutting boards for platforms, that's OK.  Cutting boards have the advantage of looking good and being about the right size.

I've tried a bunch of different things under every component I've owned - integrateds, CDPs, turntables, and speakers.  Just about everything I've used has been stuff around the house, found outside, or ordered/loaned from places with 100% money back policies.

One thing I've learned from it all, is that they all have varying effects on the component.  Even when the same component is used on a different type of table or stand, the same isolation piece will have a different effect.  For example, my Rega Apollo sounds with hockey pucks sounded different on an Ikea Lack table than it did in on the same pucks in the same places in my oak cabinet.

The Oak cabinet isn't the best sounding solution, but it keeps little hands and paws off my gear.

Of everything I've tried, hockey pucks have been the best in my system for amplification and digital sources.  They're the only thing that has improved everything and not something at the expense of another.  In my system they're far better than some absurdly priced carbon fiber cones that a friend let me try.

I'd love to get a turntable wall shelf, but it wouldn't work out in my room.  My TT sits on top of my oak cabinet, which is a horrible place for it.  I tried a ton of things, and the best thing I've used by far is a Musical Fidelity isolation shelf.  It sounds about 99% as good as when I had it on a small Ikea Lack table.  I'd put everyting on the Lack tables if I could keep them safe.

Also, Virbacones have worked very well too.  If it weren't for hockey pucks, the Vibracones would stay.  They're pretty cheap too.

I have hockey pucks under 2 of my turntables. They are $1.25 each. While they wont stop a foot drop, they will wipe out micro vibrations.

Once I lived in a very bouncy house. The floors were poorly designed with inadequate floor joists. The only solution I found was to hang the turntable from the ceiling. I got myself a platform made of wood about 24" sq. and drilled a hole in each corner. I went down to the hardware store and bought some eyebolts and nutted one of those face up into each corner. Then I bought some threaded hooks and put 2 of them in the ceiling about 3 feet apart. I then took chain and ran the appropriate length to the front 2 eyebolts. I then mounted the other 2 eyebolts to the wall so that the platform would sit level. Because the anchor points were further apart then the eyebolt pattern, the platform self-centered. I had the plateform about 4 1/2 feet up to keep kids and dogs away. It worked really good.

I must admit that discussions like this always make me think that completely getting rid of turntables and tube equipment is a good idea.

Here's a slightly mangled proverb:

If thine turntable vibrates inappropriately, pluck it out!

I am currently transferring all my old (unavailable on CD) vinyl to digital, and will then have no need for a turntable or phono section. I won't miss it.

I do believe in Component isolation.  Turntables for sure. here is my DIY "Floating Sandbox" It does work (to my ears anyways)

it would be interesting to see "lab style" test results for this type of stuff.

Nice sandboxes, undertowogt! Someday I'll make one for my VPI.

Turkey, I just love spinning vinyl. I almost never listen to CDs. There is something about the sound of vinyl, the attention it requires, the fact that it isn't plug and play, the fact that I have to flip the record over, occasionally have to wash it, align cartridges, set-up anti-skate, and on and on, that is what keeps me spinning.

Call me old fashioned, or foolish (as John, the ChairGuy calls it vinylphool), I don't care. My LP collection is about to go over the 2.5K mark. That's lots of records. I have records I haven't even heard yet. I love working on tables, I love building them and fixing them.

I listen to vinyl mostly, and I like the sound the medium.
My turntable is an idler-wheel, Dual 1219 with no rumble, as
I replaced the original mat with a Sorbothane one from
Audiquest.
My LP collection is somewhere between 2800 - 2900 LPs,
and I buy classical music mostly second-hand. And rock LPs
I buy in new pressings.
Listening to LPs is for me one of Life`s delights(!)

I am interested in knowing what kind of rack that you use to hold your Lps, do you have any picture?

Here are some records in my tinker room. I got this shelf at Menards. I think I have about 300 LPs per shelf here. I've also added to the top and have 2 other storage areas. In my main listening room, I have 2 shelves that hold approximately 800 LPs. These are my favorites that I play most of the time.

I think the shelf worked out really well. The shelves do not bow, but I had to get some 14"? floor tile to put on the ends, cause the space inbetween the shelf poles was greater then the album width.

I also have some in the laundry room and I really have to get another shelf.

I bought a bunch of 12 1/2" X 12 1/2" boxes from IKEA, and stack them, they are on the flimsy side, but I have the mobility of moving them around if needed. There are no perfect solution, I've seen some people actually custom built them to integrate as part of the house, but they are stuck to that configuration forever.

I used to do the same thing with really big cinder blocks. The damned things weighed about 100 pounds each. They were former liners from a blast furnace. When I got married they weren't allowed along for the ride...  :(

I don't miss any of those things from the bad old days before CD. :)

All of that fiddling used to drive me nuts, and take up time better used for listening to music.
