Becoming Part Of The Bryston Family
« on: 2 Feb 2009, 09:17 pm »
Hi all, this is my first post but I've been reading for awhile. I'm ready to become part of the Bryston family but I don't think new is in the books. I priced new locally at $4000+tax (CND)but I have a chance to buy a mint 3 year old 4B SST C-series for $2900 CND. Just wondering if that is a fair price or should I keep looking...
Thanks in advance.

Hi Fullvolume

Welcome to the club  I'm quite a new user too and me thinks that we could be two of a kind judging by our user names.

If I was you I would snap it up at that price as long as theirs nothing wrong with it that the warranty won't cover. At 3 years old it will still have 17 years warranty left so not much to worry about if it does need fixing in time to come, As Mr James Tanner will look after you very well I'm sure.

I own the 4BSST and I'm very happy with it, and the BP26(DA) which is also fantastic. I bought my kit having done much research into whats BEST and what is the REAL DEAL out of all equipment available in my price range. I ordered the brochure of Brystons and it was full of wonderful words with the right philosophy, a company after my own heart, kinda like a Rolex catalogue is, and you know what - Bryston are the Rolex of amplifier manufacturers, in a rugged workman like way - no nonsense. Top Bannana and every word was true. I ordered my amplifiers without even listening to them such was the influence of all the independant reviews from true professionals, not the biased magazines. I was immediately impressed when I saw the Currier huffing and puffing carrying it into my house, was probably the heaviest thing he ever lifted!!!

To be honest though I'm a bit peeved that there is a new squared model out which slightly de-values my investment and is probably the reason why you have that opportunity for the 4BSST at that price.

This 4B serves me very well and sounds a treat with any music, my taste in music is very wide indeed going from bands such as Pink Floyd - Fleetwood Mac - Dire straights etc etc - bit of pop music - right up to psychedelic Goa trance - Techno trance, Rave, Oldskool house, funky house all underground stuff mostly from Von deutsch land of coarse (the rave and trance anyway). And the Brystons sound terrific with all of them. (I think I'm the youngest Bryston owner and member ever)

The only upgrade bug that's biting me at the moment is not the amp, it is to get some HUGE speakers (MB2 preferably) for the 4BSST to get its teeth into, it bairly gets warm running my ob1's at high spl..

I'd go for it you won't regret it.

Welcome

P.S - I paid £2595.00 GBP ($4,553.12 CAD) 2 years ago which was a discounted price from RRP £2700 ($4,737.35 CAD). And was just before a price increase to £3000 (5,263.72 CAD) due to raw material costs.

BARGAIN for what you get - Dual mono, 300 wpc (mines actually 332wpc), 100 Hour burn-in, 20 year transferable warranty, its unrivalled, well done Bryston.

hi, Fullvolume!

welcome to the circle. when i was searching for high quality audio equipment i checked lots of manufacturers and their products. i found that Bryston was the company to go with. regarding the product range, reliability, style and reading some reviews it was just the perfect match for me. now if you want to buy the 4B SST and if you don't mind that there is already an 'SST2' available then just go for it. keep in mind that a preamp is essential for best results. poweramp and preamp always belong together. they are somewhat of siblings.

and Bassman...it doesn't matter what age you are. you are never too young or too old for a Bryston! :thumb:

Bassman, how old are you? As far as the SST goes, it's still a great amp...it's been around for a long time and it wasn't surprising (to me) that the line has changed.

Your right alexone

The only difference between boys and men, is the price of there toys.

I'm 27 now Vegasdave, your right about the line changing as i guess Bryston engineers are totally devoted and will stop at nothing to improve there designs which is a good thing to bring us more perfect sound reproduction equipment.

I didn't mean to imply that everyone else is old or anything, its just that judging by everyone Else's level of equipment having 14BSST's 7BSST's PMC MB2's, EB1's or whatever, and the knowledge you guys have, you've all been at it a while because those are expensive items that young men can't afford.

regards

Ok, cool. But, I dunno if you're the youngest...maybe. who knows?

Exactly. I can say with confidence that the new line is a step up in sound quality. I heard the new 7B's at CES.

No problem. I started young too 20 years ago, at 16!

I just have a BP6P and a 4BSST Pro. This is a dynamite combo to me. I don't see myself replacing them by going up the line anytime soon.

I wonder who the youngest Bryston owner really is!  :)

My wife and I are actually thinking of getting a B100SST-DA for our young-one graduating high school...   :D

When I was at school, aged 14, my Mother bought me my first seperates system consisting of Arcam Alpha 5+ amp / Kef Q15 / Sony tape deck / Atacama speaker stands / QED Qudos speaker cable.

She bought it me on the condition that I DID go to school as I was starting to go AWOL, It actually had the adverse effect though after a while because all i wanted to do was to stay at home listening to music!!!

Fullvolume, Have you decided what your gonna do?

Good question!

My wife is 6 months pregnant. When we turn the music on a bit louder (not too loud) our baby starts to jump within my wife´s belly!

We know it is going to be a boy so this might be an early start of audiophilia!
So far we have two girls that are not interested in our hobbyand finally it looks like we are going to have a partner for this passion!
He is not an owner yet of course but a Bryston fan he certainly is!

The preceeding article appeared as part of a show report by Robert Deutsch in the May 1997 issue of Stereophile.

BRYSTON BABY................

Covering this year's WCES involved rushing around to as many as 10 different venues, so it was a matter of sheer luck that I happened to be in on what must be the human interest story of the Show. I went into the Bryston suite as part of my regular rounds, and was introduced to a young couple. They were WCES attendees who had brought their baby with them. Now, you say, that's nice, but what's the big deal? Well, get this: The baby's name is Bryston!

The couple wanted to give their baby boy an unusual name, and the husband, an avid audiophile, thought of naming him after the company whose products he has long admired.

Bryston (the company) was so delighted that Bryston (the baby) is getting one of the new B-60 integrated amps as a present. Two-month-old Bryston (it is a great name, isn't it?) was looking around, alert and bright-eyed, obviously impressed with the sound of the PMC speakers that "Uncle Bryston" is distributing.

Since this thread seems to becoming age related I must ask the group, is 58 too old to join the Bryston family?  I'll openly admit I'm looking at the 7B's over the 14B because it's easier to pick up 50 lbs. twice than 85 lbs. once!  It seems the old salt of the thread so far is vegasdave at a ripe old age of 36 so you can appreciate my concern!!

James,

This seems like our beloved Bryston components are not only entertaining but are also contributing to development of our families! :thumb:
Another point of view to this hobby!

I bought the amp!! Holy sh*t !! What a difference from what I'm used to. I don't have a $10000 pair of speakers but you can hear the improvement. I've had the same speaker setup for 8 years now. Just when you feel like upgrading the money seems to go towards the house, car, etc. In the fall I did upgrade my receiver to a Pioneer Elite SC-07 and Panasonic plasma. My speaker setup is all Mirage...OM-7, OM-C2, Om-R2, 2xBPS-400, LFX2 crossover and 2x NAD C272. I would love to hear a pair of PMC's but there is no local dealer...actually the local Bryston dealer is a 2 1/2 hour drive! Anyway no regrets as my sound has improved.... next purchase will be mains....

I was 31 when I bought my first Bryston.

I'm now 32.  Hopefully it won't take me 31 years to get my next Bryston.  I think the BDA-1 will be outdated a bit by that time.  Then again, it is a Bryston.
