I have been listening to these guys together as group called "The Poll Winners" and on their own. Almost every CD is awesome musically and in fidelity. If you like foot tappin' jazz, give a listen.

I just bought 8 more of their various CDs to add to the collection ............. Don't tell my wife!

Great choice! I've been listening to the Poll Winners series since I bought them on vinyl back when vinyl was the only option. This music just never gets old. Ray Brown is amazing throughout and Barney Kessel is my all time favorite jazz guitar player (with Kenny Burrell not far behind). Kessel hits a sustained bass chord toward the end of his solo about 2/3rd of the way through Satin Doll that is a great test for midbass definition. If it sounds solid and real and brings a grin to your face you know you've got good speakers.

CSI,

I am also a Kenny Burrell fan. How about Howard Alden?

Excellent. I also listen to a lot of Russell Malone and Wes Montgomery. I often find myself going back to Ron Eschete records and I really love Joe Pass and Pat Metheny. I think one of the great unsung players, who died way too young, was Emily Remler. And for way back, check out Johnny Smith. He was the one guitar player for whom, when they had a special tribute for him in New York ten years ago, darn near every guitar player on the planet showed up. When Russell Malone saw him walk in the door he reacted the way you or I might if a famous movie star walked in.

CSI and lonewolfny42

Looks like our taste in guitar players is very similar! I was lucky enough to hear Emily Remler play live here in Pittsburgh. In fact a buddy of mine took lessons from her.

I forgot about the "Great Guitars" series Time to dig out some of my old vinyl!

While we're listing some of our favorites....here's a few more of mine.
 - Bucky and John Pizzarelli
 - Eric Gale (CTI session musician)
 - Tal Farlow
 - Mimi Fox

    +1 on all mentioned.

Mosaic Records has done boxed sets on Johnny Smith, Tal Farlow, Joe Pass.

A good solo guitar is Joe Pass; Ira, George and Joe.

Herb Ellis and Red Mitchell; Doggin' Around

Jim Hall and Ron Carter; Alone Together is a great live recording.

Expanding the criteria a little but still in the same vein are Joe Pass and Zoot Sims (Sax) Blues For Two and Joe Pass and J.J. Johnson (Trombone) We'll Be Together Again.

A Vocal is Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass; Take Love Easy (An Original XRCD)

Good to see Emily Remler mentioned.  She is suberb, inventive listening.  Try East to Wes (Concord Jazz).  Barney Kessell and all the other old bluesy dogs getting talked about have me pulling out old albums.  The Contemporary label, the home of some of these cats under discussion, has consistently fine sound, too.  And a note to the lonewolfster, Lady Gabor, with Charles Lloyd back when they were with Chico Hamilton is Szabo at the very best I've heard him.  Long, soulful number.  Lloyd on flute.  Happy trails.  Saw this group on every occasion I could when I lived in the City by the Bay.

Zack, I believe I have Alone Together.  I'm lookin.

Great string! I've heard most of the players and own many of the albums mentioned. I bought all of Emily Remler's albums I could find (not many). One name is new to me (Mimi Fox). I will check her out. Maybe we should start a string on great Jazz bass players. Some of my favorites have fascinating back stories. Milt Hinton was a world class photographer and I have an autographed copy of his photo book. The amazing left handed bass player John Leitham is still playing beautifully - except now he (she) is Jennifer Leitham. Try "The Southpaw".

Here is a link to her album called "Kicks". It is my favorite.

Thanks! It is available on Rhapsody along with 5 other albums so she is streaming through my speakers right now (Rhapsody>Sonos>Channel Islands DAC and other electronics>Sapphire XL's). Great chops. Any album that starts out with Cherokee in medium tempo then doubles the time is off to a fine start. Thanks again for the tip.
