*SOLD* DIY Pass Mini Aleph
« on: 17 Nov 2008, 05:29 pm »
OK, don't believe me. When I got one of Tim Rawson's Mini Alephs, it sounded so good that when a real-deal Aleph 30 came along, I thought it must sound better and bought it. Well, I liked the Mini mo' bettah and ended up selling the 30. (I've seen one or two other people also say they preferred the Mini to the original.) If you don't need the extra power of the 30 and can make do with 15 watts, this is one of the shweetesht amps you'll hear, and that's coming from a long-time tubophile.

Here's what Mr. Rawson his own self told me when I bought the amp: "It's basically an Aleph 3 using one pair of output fets and a little lower voltage but also some of the front-end improvements (like input impedence) of the Aleph 30. Of the four Alephs I've tried, Mini, 3, 30, and 5, I like mini and 30 best."

I have two of these fellas, so one's got to go. I sent Tim a set of WBT binding posts to install, and at my request, he drilled some holes in the bottom of the chassis, since these suckers run hot in Class A. This one also comes with an LED power light, which Tim's amps usually don't have. For those of you unfamiliar with Tim's work, the beauty is in the insides; the outsides of his projects are a bit rough and ready.

$350. Paypal add 3%. Please PM if you're interested.

Hey, a thick slice of good roast beef and a couple slabs of bread make a sandwich. You don't worry about how pretty it is once you've tickled your stomach with the taste.

ah, there's not much to see with nelson amps - a power tranny, PS board and 2 ouput boards....everything really small:)

I have compared an F3 with my Aleph mini-J. The Rawson amp won handily, which puzzled me no end. Now of course they are different topologies so that's the first gotcha.

Not that the F3 was bad, but it was sorta laid back and didn't light up the music the way the Rawson does. And no, I don't like bright sound; this is a different thing.

A weekend nudge before this toddles down the Yellow Brick Road to Audiogon.

Any chance you know what the input impedance and sensitivity is?

No, I don't. As it says in the description, the amp is basically a 3 with some features of the 30, including input impedance. There should be info out there, both at Pass and for the Mini, that gives specs.
