Burned Out Switch
« on: 14 Nov 2008, 10:51 pm »
Hey, I have a bit of a problem.

The rocker switch on the back of my stratos amp burned out and I need to replace it.  Does anyone know how to remove it?  I don't want to really bother Klaus about it as it's a simple problem and I'm sure he's a busy man - especially since Kismet came out.

Cheers.
Rob.

IIRC its just one of the pop in type switches and all you have to do is get a small flathead screwdriver and you'll see little tabs holding it in on the top and bottom or either side and you just push them in while at the same time you push the switch out.

When you replace it make sure you get one thats rated for the same current.

I just came on here because I figured it out.

But thanks Haoleb.

Now how about getting a free replacement switch from Klaus........
Nah, just kidding.

Hmmm... I just dug out a QSC MX1500A from the basement to use for now (It's a pro audio amp), actually if you take the cover off one and the other, the Odyssey looks a bit inferior with it's single circuit board and transformer (considering that the QSC is a pure mono design with dual transformers (and I believe 8 or 12 Fets/channel) and are rated at 350w/channel into 8 Ohms)

But listening to the QSC for 5 seconds revealed why I like the odyssey so much.  The amp has no essence, no soundstage, and sounds extremely muddy while the treble is extremely thin.  While this might be a harsh assessment of an amp that originally cost slightly more than the odyssey, I don't think I can listen to it for very long.

I might try the AB Audio amp I have, but if my memory serves my correct it sounded even muddier.
(These amps have been in storage for over 3 years now)

So I dug out the third amp as well.  An AB Audio Prescedent 600A, accurate to my memory this amp is much more muddy with no definition on the mid/treble.  Ah well, at least it doesn't make the treble overly thin like the QSC, although the QSC seems more accurate than the AB with quicker response - I'm still not sure which one I'll end up using tonight.

Hopefully I can pick up a replacement switch tomorrow and get my Odyssey back up.

For those that want to know what everything looks like on the inside...

Hmm... an interesting result.

After disconnecting my pre-amp and connecting the QSC directly to the source it sounds much better.  It seems like a tubed preamp isn't a good match for the QSC.  I'm actually going to be interested in ABing the Odyssey against the QSC once I get the switch replaced without the pre: - although if I recall correctly I've already done this

The caps in the QSC almost look like they are all bulging out the top in the picture. They arent are they?

No they're not.

Sorry, I didn't look at the pictures before I uploaded them or I'd have taken another one.  I'm not too keen on doing it now as there are 12 screws that hold the cover in place and the amp is quite heavy.
