Low speaker stands?
« on: 11 Nov 2008, 03:00 am »
Guys

I'd like to get my Yorkville Unity's up off the ground and get the tweeter more at ear level.  This will probably take somewhere between 6-12 inches of height (need to measure it when I get home).

The speakers are kind of awkard in that they are not a square or rectangle.  The front width is 22.5" and the back width is 13" and they are 16.5" deep.

You can see them here:

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Jim

I don't have an answer to your question, but I am curious as to how those sound.

Here's a link for Sound Anchor stands for Splendor SP-100 that have a simular design. Sound Anchor will custom make a stand to your desired height & angle and would narrow that back to fit your speaker's width. :thumb:

JDubs,

I'd call standman. http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=57261.msg504603#msg504603

I don't have any of his products, but he is highly regarded around here, and regularly offers a nice discount to AC members. He consistently states he welcomes custom work.  Bound to be worth the price of a free PM, huh?

Have fun,
Jerry

I have a couple of chunky (90-pound) stand-mount speakers in my living room right now, but instead of using stands I'm using two large blocks of wood under each.  The blocks measure 4" by 6" by maybe 12" long, and I had them cut at Home Depot where I bought them.  The blocks are sitting with the 4" width on the floor, so they elevate the speakers 6" off the ground.  The result is a nice warm sound but without the chestiness of having the speaker sitting directly on the floor, and also the bass hits harder than it did when I had 'em up on stands.  Only dowside is the soundstage is lower than normal.

you might wanna try something that tilts the speakers.  mapleshade makes stands for this, kinda spendy:

i did a diy arrangement with cinderblocks and 2x2's under the fronts of some wintage sansui sp2500's; it worked great...

Good recco. Although Mapleshade believes that the tweeter at ear level is not recco. They believe that the speaker should be low as well as your listening chair. I tried it and the results were interesting. The stage hgt, was taller the speakers disappeared better and the bass was improved. worth an experiment to see iof you may perfer this method. have fun
