I have a couple of chunky (90-pound) stand-mount speakers in my living room right now, but instead of using stands I'm using two large blocks of wood under each. The blocks measure 4" by 6" by maybe 12" long, and I had them cut at Home Depot where I bought them. The blocks are sitting with the 4" width on the floor, so they elevate the speakers 6" off the ground. The result is a nice warm sound but without the chestiness of having the speaker sitting directly on the floor, and also the bass hits harder than it did when I had 'em up on stands. Only dowside is the soundstage is lower than normal.
