Neo-2X TL Tower

I haven't listened to the new Neo-2X speakers,but all reports so far have been very positive. Just wondering if they might sound even better in a transmission line tower type enclosure similar in size to the AV-3's.Anyone have any thoughts about this? Maybe Danny would like to comment.

Hang on though. I will be doing an MTM using our M-130/16's and the new deep back cup Neo. It will basically be like the A/V-3 but using the Neo tweeter and being just slightly taller.

This should give the performance of the smaller Neo models with tighter more well controlled and more extended bottom end, higher sensitivity, and still maintain the easy 8 ohm load.

I just checked the NEO3 box drawings against the AV-3 box and they are the same height, has this changed? No issue if it has since I haven't started them yet but I would like to know.

I stand corrected. I thought I moved the upper woofer up a little to accommodate the larger tweeter diameter, but I really moved the bottom woofer down just a little bit. It is the same height.

Also, is there an ETA for this A/V-3 Neo design? This will be my center channel to match my Neo-2X's. Box is built and waiting for the goodies

I'll get the crossover work completed as soon as I get a test box over here to use.

I am going to guess it to be in the $450 to $500 range including Sonicaps. It depends on the cost of the crossover. Other upgrading options will bump the price from there.

I definitely want to build pair when they becomes available provided I can sell my existing AV-3's. If anyone is interested in buying a nice pair of AV-3's finished in cherry,just drop me an email.

Where is the "official" drawing for these boxes? If none, can you post up your drawing eargasm? I'd like to build a pair.

So the boxes in Fred's home theater design were using Hank's design from that past thread?

I'm cool with the 2 woof design, I just got the feeling you had a one woof up your sleeve. I'm leaning to just building a ported mini monitor Neo right now to get a taste and then maybe building a couple of your designs over the coming years.

Fred built his as small ported floor standing speakers, and not as a TL design.

A good option for a small room is a sealed Neo-2X. Then add a separate, single, direct servo sub to cover the bottom end. The sealed box starts to roll off sooner and will more mirror the room gain of a smaller room. The servo control system on the sub will allow easy integration and will allow you to EQ it to your smaller room pretty easy too. Another bonus to the sub sat system is that it would be full range.

Thanks. It will not be a primary listening room so I don't want to run a sub.

Was Fred's design from Hank or from you? Does a larger volume ported Neo design like that open up the bottom any more - in a good way? Or is it too much of a compromise in your opinion?

I wouldn't say it opens up the bottom end. It gives it more low end extension.

No real compromise but, if it is a small room and the speaker must be placed near the wall behind it then you might want to port it out the front.

My speakers are a slight variation. on Hank's Mini-Towers, (the Rav6). I could have easily used the sealed NEO-2Xs--that would have been a lot easier--but I liked the idea of having the main left and right channels being more "full", and I liked the idea of the center speaker being able to overlap the TV bezel, and I enjoyed the construction challenge. I ported them to the front because they have to stand close to the wall.

For years I have wanted to build my own speakers, and as I have always liked simple two way speaker designs, so I sort of set out to build the ultimate (save I didn't get the upgraded internal wire or binding posts). I don't know weather I accomplished it or not, but they sound great, they look great, and I like 'em. Nevertheless, they are about as large as I would ever need or want in my room.

Now, if had known how incredible the subwoofer would be, I may have built the sealed NEO-2Xs instead. So my recommendation, is that unless you want to spend lots of time being creative, Go with the sealed version an the sub.

FWIW, the are continuing to burn in, and so far the most interesting thing I've noticed about them is that I can turn them up really loud, and they don't get harsh.

Thanks for the tips, Fred. I have come to the same conclusion, I'm just going to build some mini-monitors. Thanks also for posting your build. Those are some very nice cabinets. Look good with that XBR.
