Was the Denon you had a refurb or A-stock? I've owned a lot of Denon gear over the years and I've found them to be extremely solid and reliable. Denon transports (esp changers) are a bit noisy in operation, but they do seem to last and function well.
This whole thing is sorta drifting off tangent, which is certainly okay, yet the point here is that the Pioneer isn't too bad a machine, and it doesn't have any competition at that price. It's a good way to see if you like MC, and that's a pretty nice deal on a player even if you don't plan to listen to SACD or DVD-A. Pioneer's reading of MP3, WMA, & JPEG discs seems to be completely bulletproof, as reliable as I've experienced.
If a person wants to spend the money, the Denons sound great, IMO. To get your feet wet, the Pioneer is a good budget machine. That's all it is, but in the context of this discussion, I think that's good enough.
