Personally I am interested on that unit so Ihave done some research and this is what I have found:

" Pioneer will integrate
Philips’ SAA7893HL chip into its DVD Player (DV-563A-S) and ... "

Philips chip PDF:

I2S

I2S (Inter-IC Sound) is a serial bus (path) design for digital audio devices and technologies such as compact disc (CD) players, digital sound processors, and digital TV (DTV) sound. The I2S design handles audio data separately from clock signals. By separating the data and clock signals, time-related errors that cause jitter do not occur, thereby eliminating the need for anti-jitter devices. An I2S bus design consists of three serial bus lines: a line with two time-division multiplexing (TDM) data channels, a word select line, and a clock line.

MARANTZ:
With the SAA7893HL, SACD will become a cost-efficient 'must-have' feature in the DVD-video market and will bring SACD possibilities to the end-consumer".
"Philips' SACD solutions help us to bring the highest quality music to our demanding listeners", commented Katsumi Shimoguchi, general manager of Marantz.

The SA-MP delivers extra flexibility when connecting to different DAC types, which
can be: DSD only, PCM only or multi standard (DSD + PCM)]. In Table 31 the signal
allocation is given for the 6-channel output in DSD and in PCM-I2S mode.

Table 31: Connection to a 6-channel DAC
Output line Pin
number
Mode = DSD Mode = PCM
DSD_PCM_0 108 left channel Lf + Rf; Ls + Rs; C + LFE; 0 or 1;
PCM data/word clock
DSD_PCM_1 109 right channel Lf + Rf; Ls + Rs; C + LFE; 0 or 1;
PCM data/word clock
DSD_PCM_2 110 center channel Lf + Rf; Ls + Rs; C + LFE; 0 or 1;
PCM data/word clock
DSD_PCM_3 111 LFE channel Lf + Rf; Ls + Rs; C + LFE; 0 or 1;
PCM data/word clock
DSD_PCM_4 113 left surround Lf + Rf; Ls + Rs; C + LFE; 0 or 1;
PCM data/word clock
DSD_PCM_5 114 right surround Lf + Rf; Ls + Rs; C + LFE; 0 or 1;
PCM data/word clock
DSD_PCM_6 115 DSD clock or
0 or 1
PCM data/word clock
DSD_PCM_7 116 DSD clock or
0 or 1
PCM data/word clock

So I think for the price it is a good entry into high resolution audio and video.

You could ask these guys about modding a 563A to be region free.

Would you still be interested in that DV-S755Ai if I got that repaired? I was at Magnolia earlier this week, and they said they would fix it if they could.

Just to put things in perspective.  The Philips DVD963SA does convert DSD to PCM in order to use the Bass Management with multi-channel SACDs.  There's an option in the 963SA menu to bypass the BM block and send the DSD signal directly to the DACs but you'll loose the BM functions.  And one more thing.  The DACs for center, sub, and L/R surrounds of this player aren't in the same league of its L/R main channels (Analog Devices AD-1955).

Most of the SACD players (except for some Sony's top of the line) do convert DSD to PCM to include Bass Management for multi-channel function.  And the Denon DVD5900 does it too.  On the Denon, you'll have to bypass the BM function in order to transfer DSD directly to the DACs.

Of course, you'll always have the option to use the Outlaw ICBM.

Hello

what's wrong with PCM at (over) 192kHz ? nothing according to :

www.smr-home-theatre.org/surround2002/ technology/page_07.shtml

(P.S.: I am a spaniard newbie who's just landed on this forum looking for the light at the end of the tunnel and so replace my SONY DVP S7700 for a progressive DVI DVD player. My system: Rotel 1066/1075, Dreamweaver II, B&W 700. I apologise for my english, spanish being my mother tonge. This is also my first message ever posted on any forum)

Carusso, bienvenidos!  Welcome to the forum and don't worry about language.  Your English is better than some American's English that I have seen :)   I didn't have time to read the article in your link, but perhaps other people will reply to your question.
rosconey:  tell us how your REALLY feel about the Pioneer?  I take it you had a bad listening experience.
