My life revolves around music and I could write/contribute forever on the subject. But scrolling through the posts thus far puts a damper on my views because when you break it up " well respected music you just don't get " is in the eye of the beholder.

Frank with all due respect- it appears you are "not getting this thread."  It all ment for entertainment purposes.  Im sure all of us agree without even posting that the entire thing is subjective. Its for FUN.  And audio could use a bit more tounge in cheek stuff like this b/c the mainstream press for the most part only does "raves" and never really harsh criticism.   But thats another topic.

As said by the esteemed wordsmiths (Len Blum, Harold Ramis & Daniel Goldberg)  and bards of the 1980's in their important earthshattering, land mark fim Stripes " Lighten up francis"

Seriously Mike...the cymbal I'm talking about is the one made famous by Mel Lewis. It ain't cheap but man what a sound! I've been procrastinating for the longest time on purchasing one to use in my home recordings. I wish there was a digital sample of this cymbal. :(

Artist who put me in a bad mood:
Phil Collins- Su Su Sooo bad!
Bruce Springsteen (Born in the USA and after)- What happened?
Coldplay-Did I just throw up in my mouth?
Sting- What a pompous douchebag.
Garth Brooks- Is he a Saturday Night Live skit?

Artists I don’t get:
John Lennon
Bob Dylan
Dave Mathews Band
Yes
Rush
Wide Spread Panic

Good calls
KBuzz – great call on Graham Parsons. That album is a joke and I happen to love music of this ilk. The Stones were at their best singing the alt country stuff.
Tedb- Pet Sounds is unlistenable
Nels ferre- Duffy- finger nails on a chalk board, but I would still shag her.

To the contrary
Love Neil Young.. Live at Massey Hall is a treat.
The Who is just great.
REM Automatic for the people doesn’t have a bad song. One of my all time favorite “front to back” albums
Grateful Dead- Lots of mediocrity with burst of utter brilliance. Check out Cornell 1977 if you can find it.
Steely Dan and Radiohead are always enjoyable.
Up to about a year or  ago I used to think the Beetles were elevator music. Then I went to a live Beetles cover band (Abbey Road Live) and became a convert.
Wilco- See last Austin city Limits performance. It pushed me off the fence of indifference and now a fan. Sometimes I have to see a band play live to “get” them.

KISS  (My step brother was a KISS fan and as a little kid I remember being frightened and amazed by the album jackets but the music was just so damn boring.  Even now I still don't understand the appeal, it's just so bland.)

The Rolling Stones  (I liked a few songs but overall, extremely dull.  By the way, is "Sympathy For Devil" like 30 minutes long?  That's what it seems like.  How could anyone possibly sing "woo woo" that many times without going completely insane?  Is it a tape loop?)

Manowar  (I don't get it.  It's like Spinal Tap x1000 but they're not being tongue in cheek.  And that cover art! Augh!)

I think we have opposite tastes.  I think the solo Bruce Springsteen albums are great.  However, the last CD with the E Street Band was horrible.  I can't quite like Dave Matthews, Radiohead, or Wilco.  I absolutely abhor the Beatles.  They've been far too overplayed for me.  REM is too pop for me. The Who is shockingly bad and I can't think of a single good song they make.  I like Bob Dylan's older stuff.

Part of this is where and when you grew up (at least for me).  I hate the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Bob Seger, etc., because of the massive number of times they were played each day on the radio stations near me when I grew up.  I simply cannot bring myself to listen to them.  On the other hand, I thought Bruce Sprinsteen was way too pop for me, but some of his newer stuff isn't bad (though I couldn't listen to "Born in the USA" if you paid me to do so).

I have not seen them mentioned yet, Lynyrd Skynyrd. I don't know if they are well respected outside of the Deep South, but I get them, and that makes me ask, why?

I am resisting defending Bjork, I happen to be an odd duck who digs her stuff - I can live with it!  I used to have a poster of hers in my room at university, the giant one of just her face, same as the album cover for Debut.  Love the Sugarcubes, and Debut, though it rapidly gets odd thereafter, I still like some of it.

I have listened to the Tragically Hip since the 80's, but for me their stuff after the late 90's has gone odd places.  I love their old bar band days.

+1 on Zappa, Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, Patricia Barber.

Cassandra Wilson - I really wanted to like New Moon Daughter, but for the life of me I cannot listen to it through.

As for Rave/Trance/Techno/Progressive etc - I would say it is a state of mind.  Used to be fun clubbing, now great for riding my bike on the trainer.

Doug: Thats the idea
As for lynrd skynrd i agreed until i listen the the drive by truckers southern rock opera. Which kind of explains the whole skynrd "mystique" from the southern point of view. With great music as well.
That btw is a must have disc. IMHO
