And IMHO... 'Out of Time' is REM's real masterpiece.  :green:

I don't know if this is "well respected" or not, but last night my wife and I caught Duffy on Saturday Night Live.

Having never heard Duffy, I was open minded- until she opened her mouth. My first thought---"WTF????"

It's like she was huffing helium before she went on stage, and her enunciation was damn near unintelligible.  Are the executives at the record company smoking crack, or are they deaf?

And they wonder why music sales are declining.  I just don't get it.

One artist whose music I like is Ben Harper, but he just can't sing or play guitar to save himself.  So, while I enjoy it, I don't get how he even got in the door of the first recording studio.

-- Jim

Have you ever seen Ben Harper live?

His guitar work is extraordinary!!   :guitar:

Personally, I like his voice, but that is a debatable topic, his guitar playing simply isn't.

George

Gotta agree with George here, I think Ben Harper's guitar work is great.  Now, Neil Young's on the other hand could win "worst solo ever".

I don't agree about Neil Young I think he's fab. But that's down to his attitude (seen him live and he doesn't give a damn whether people want a 5 minute solo for the last chord...he does :) )

Wow, just goes to show how different we all are...I think Ben Harper is divine!  :guitar: (thank you NYAR and LonewolfChris to turning me on to his extraordinary talent)

Now Lenny Kravitz, an artist to which he is regularly compared to (mixed race of White/Jewish and Black parents, and definitely funky) I don't understand or appreciate his music at all.

But Ben Harper has herculean talent (the only one I can compare him to today is Sting....and in my book, that's saying a lot) :thumb:

Here is another band I just don't know how they got a recording contract: Kraftwerk. It's the perfect music for 1941 German youth (if you get my trying not to be political meaning)  aa

I am not much an electronica or synth guy, but I think "Autobahn" is great.

Now...."Cap'n Beefheart Trout Mask Replica" I am totally clueless about! I try hard to listen to it, but can't even make it through one side of the record. I am sure others will rush to its defense, but just as Wayne don't like kraftwerk, I don't get Beefheart.

His first album " Safe As Milk " is his most straightforward .

OK, I'll admit that I have 4 Kraftwerk albums. I do like ComputerWorld, more because of its sonics then anything else. The other 3 are...................well, I just don't know.

That's all I'll admit to...for now. Unless I'm tortured. But not alot....then I'll talk like hell.

One guy I've never gotten is Willie Nelson.   His voice grates on me like nails on a blackboard.   His guitar playing even gets on my nerves and is grossly overrated in my opinion.   He hasn't played an upstroke in his life.

Whew, I feel better now.  :D

Love the "Dan", Zappa and the Beatles.

Don't get almost all hip hop and/or rap...Don't get Madonna or Michael Jackson...Don't get George Strait either (does he even play the guitar or does he just like it hanging around his neck like country bling?). I do get Kiss and Kid rock...they both suck.  :peek: :icon_lol:

I don't know how "well respected" this is, but after reading all the hype on the message board about Allison Krause/Robert Plant, I bought the CD when I couldn't find the vinyl.  I listened to the first 3 or 4 tracks and turned it off.  It remained in the box until the other day when I gave it another try.  It was almost the same result, but I left it on because I fell asleep.

In this order:

Diana Krall
Patricia Barber
Steely Dan (particularly Aja)

This is pretty much the top selection in every single audio store. This is some of the most boring, uninvolving, and emotionless music. And to top it all, the recordings are for the most part horrible!

I've been to dozens of audiophile stores, I've sold audio equipment for a while and this is all they ever played. My personal pet peeve are the customers who would request "Female Vocals" to evaluate the system. First, if that's all they use to evaluate a system, then they obviously haven't got the slightest clue about sound reproduction and second, my Britney Spears' single, "Hit Me Baby One More Time!" always came in handy.

Trust me, Oct 25 we will make beautiful music together but in the end I will kill you. Listen to FS "Only the Lonely".

BTW order a Zildjian 22" Swish Knocker and you will smile forever.

My life revolves around music and I could write/contribute forever on the subject. But scrolling through the posts thus far puts a damper on my views because when you break it up " well respected music you just don't get " is in the eye of the beholder.

Not only do i not get REM, ive never got them even in 1985. They sucked then, they suck now.  The "college radio" promoters were wrong then and they are still wrong.  Not only that they appropriated my fave esoteric "frequency kenneth" saying.  Darn...

I hear about the same whining from my twin 6 year olds as i do with REM. Much "the same frequency" and the same level of annoyance....glad to see folks on this site have the same musical IQ

As someone else said, music is quite personal.  I agree R.E.M. albums started going down hill after Automatic for the People but I love their early stuff.  Punchy, introspective, folksy, punk rock is the best way to describe their early stuff.   If you never dug them then that's fine but using the term "wrong" is well just wrong  :nono:

Captain Beefheart is regarded by some writers, critics, etc. as one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time.   I'm a big Zappa fan,  which is kinda sorta the next closest thing I've heard compared to Beefheart.  But I just don't get the Captain.   Some of it I even like,  but I just don't get it. Bat Chain Puller...Puller, Puller?  A squid in a polyethelyn bag is fast and bulbous?  WTF?   :duh:

This is all kinda tounge in cheek....ill try and save "wrong" for the new thread "most ovverated."  I do stand by my REM opinion though, to each his own...
