Gallo Ref 3.1 vs Lorelei

Has anyone auditioned these two speakers? What are your thoughts?

How do you think they would fare in the following setting?: Room size 28'x15'x9', placement on short wall, powered by 24w tube amp.

I haven't heard the Lorelei, but I have the Gallos. They're great. My room is about the size of yours except at one end it's open to an entry, a hallway and the kitchen door. At the other end it is completely open (sideways) to the dining room. I don't know about 18 watts though; I'd worry they wouldn't have enough to push the deep base you should get from the Gallos.

I agree, 18W won't cut it, you'll need a bass amp for the Gallos.

Thank you for your replies.

FWIW I checked the amp specs and its output is 24W, not much difference I understand.

Anybody using something similar on the Gallo's or Lorelei?

I have Gallo 3.0 version and use it with my modded Jolida 302b. Very nice combination but it needs more power. I will be hooking up my sub amp again as these speakers used to be in the main,Large room.
I thought I could get away with it but need more juice.

I will say that for moderate level small room listening with acoustic jazz, piano it is good.

Have you tried the resistor tweak on the 3.1s?  It consists of tying a 10 watt, 10 Ohm resistor across the subwoofer terminals.  Don't drive the subwoofer driver with an amp - the resistor only.  Common sense says it will do nothing.  But I and some others like the resistor tweak to actually using a sub amp.

According to taste, you can try a 15 Ohm resistor, but use one of at least 10 watts.

I haven't tried this on mine. I expect it will result in inductive coupling between the main voice coil and the sub, changing (reducing) the impedance (magnitude and phase) seen by the main amp. I'm not surprised there is a detectable change, but why it should result in an improvement I have no idea.

I listen mostly to classical and jazz. For me a wide soundstage and a nice midrange are more important than great bass. Still i would like to buy speakers that match well with my 24W amp, any suggestions?

Thanks

That EE Amp has got some power. I did not see that was your Amp. Tubes and Gallo are very nice!

Have not heard Spendor but Harberth is always at the top of many lists for the British sound. Great soundstage, reputation and accuracy. Pricey though...

I would suggest trying to hear as many of them as you can find with similar gear or at home demo.
Good luck

If I'm not mistaken, your Jolida 302b outputs 50W, the M520 only 25W. The kind of music I listen to should help, but I'm not sure.

I live in Mexico, so it's hard to audition a lot of stuff.

Thanks

There is 1 fact here that hasn't been mentioned yet,,, even with only 24 watts you won't need a subwoofer with the Lorelei's. I've posted enough here on my love of the Lorelei so a simple search will save me from repeating myself. Plus after over 4 years use, nothing has changed and I continue to crank them up.

I've never hear the Gallo's myself.

Cheers,
Robin

That's true, everybody says that the Lorelei have great bass. If 24W are enough to drive them, they're a great choice.
