Shelby Lynne, November 13 @ Narrows Center for the Arts.
Great show. Narrows is a small theater near Battleship Cove in Fall River. There is plenty of parking. Tickets were $35.00 advance, $40.00 at the door. Children twelve and under are half price. My wife and three kids left Boston last evening after I completed teaching a class. There was a little traffic but we arrived about 8:30PM, mid-way through the opening act. We were seating at a table about 15-20 feet from the stage, which is elevated about 18 inches. The room acoustics were OK, but they could use some sound deadening treatments. Narrows is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization, and I don't believe that they have a lot of money for acoustic consultation and treatments. The audience was twenty-somethings through late middle-age and retirement age. There is BYOB, other beverages, and food, with only a small refreshment stand. They have some good performers; Taj Mahal performed last week, and Los Lobos and Richie Havens are two of the scheduled performers this season.
Shelby Lynne was outstanding. Her voice is amazing. The band was great. I rarely attend live music venues any more, and I have only been to sixty or seventy concerts/club appearances in my lifetime, but I enjoyed this show more than others, partly because the performers are in such close proximity, almost like the performance is in someone's home.
Now, for vinyl-holics, during her performance, Shelby pulled out an LP and told the audience, "This is an album, and this is the only way to listen to music."
