Uhh…I thought expensive things were supposed to look, you know, expensive.
Yes. Expensive things should (and almost always do) look expensive. But this particular amp exceeds "expensive" by an order of magnitude. This is an amp designed for when "expensive" simply isn't enough. Items such as these can
never look "expensive", lest people mistakenly believe that the owner spent a mere fortune on it.
Think about it this way. Hugh Heffner is is always turned out immaculately. He's famous and he's rich, and consequently he gets to sleep with lots of attractive women. But when it comes to attracting the ladies, he's not in the same league as Mick Jagger. Mick would never dress like Heff, or people would think that he
needed to dress like Heff. It's the same with the Lamm. If it looked like one of those sweet Hovland Sapphires, or an Art Audio Carissa, people would think it only cost as much as a Hovland Sapphire or an Art Audio Carissa. But to adopt a look as humdrum as the Lamm's announces that the amp is in a completely different price range.
