Thoughts on internet based speaker companies.
« on: 29 Jul 2008, 09:32 pm »
What's your take on some of these companies & there speaker lines. To name a few: Axiom, Aperion, SVSound, Emotiva, Ascend Acoustics, AV123, Outlaw Audio, Ohm, Tyler Acoustics, Salk Sound. Are there any others that you know of?.

All of them seem to have pretty darn good stuff, & they pretty much receive good reviews across the board. I was always curious about trying some of then out but just never got around to it.

Has anyone here tried any of them & if so what's your thoughts. Curiousity is creeping in. The new one from Aperion, the 6T looks like a killer!

shhhhh! Don't tell anybody this but, it is, especially at the price  :green: Look for the write up in September or Octobers EnjoyTheMusic  :thumb:

Seriously, Aperion offers a lot of speaker for the money. I'm listening to the 632LRs in my office rig right now. Great little speaker for the money.

Well, it isn't easy to sell speakers without people hearing them...I can attest to this  :D.  It is however a reality that good brick and mortar stores are going away at a fast clip often due to their own business practices, and selling internet direct offers a wider variety of products at extremely competitive prices by doing away with many of the costs involved with distribution, retail, and marketing.

Any of the brands you mention have a much higher percentage of their asking price tied up in drivers, parts, and construction than most major "audiophile" brands.

Many allow extended in-home audition with a liberal return policy paying only shipping cost. Granted, it can be a hassle; but this is hard to beat. I bought my Zu Definition 1.5s this way and then upgraded to the Def 2s.

One that isn't mentioned, but really should be included, is the Exodus Audio "Kepler" Speaker. I use these as my reference speakers and they're excellent.

Where else would companies reside? I don't have a speaker company down the road. Why try and reach a few thousand people by newpaper or magazine when you can reach millions on the internet. That is the reason why many towns "downtown" is all but gone, and the local mall isn't far behind. If you are not a big presence on the internet, your a little shit of a company about to fold. Business is going to also have to learn to start selling globally, that means building to CE standards and stuff like that. There are only two modes of operation in the business market today: grow or shrink. There is a flat line (your dead).

I own a boat-load of av123 products and will be selling for Tweak City Audio...sort of a budget spin-off.

So yeah, I dig 'em...can't touch the value of any of them in a store IMHO.

Hi Don,

I'm planning on coming, I don't know if it will be on Friday or Saturday though. I wouldn't mind bringing the Keplers, but Kevin thinks it's kind of tacky to have commercial stuff at what is an essentially DIY event. Since they are actually a sonically refined, and much better looking, version of the speakers I had at last year's event, I'm not sure that he can make too big a deal about it. All I can say for now is ...maybe :green:

Are you bringing your preamp? Or do you have some new marvels that will be unveiled for the first time? That's what I really like about Dave's meet, the wholly unexpected and original projects that are brought. I finally had surgery on my wrist on the 2nd of the month, but I really haven't been able to do much since Feb., so I probably wouldn't have anything else to share.

Best Regards,
TerryO

Hawthorne Audio is an internet direct company as well.

I feel that buying from a B&M store can be much the same as buying internet direct.  When you listen to a speaker in a store, you still don't have that good of an idea how it will sound in your home.  Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.  Same with internet direct speakers.

Selah Audio is another. Circle on here too, just scroll down to that area. One of Rick's satisfied customers.

You can see what I think from my sig. Speakers that I would group with the HT3's are at least double the price in a store/salon. If you want comparable cabinetry with the sound it could be 3-4 times the price.

Any of the brands you mention have a much higher percentage of their asking price tied up in drivers, parts, and construction than most major "audiophile" brands.

When I compared the HT3's drivers with "major "audiophile" brands" in the same price range, I found that to be the case, by a large margin.

Getting to know and working with the builder. I picked up my speakers from Jim Salk's home. Spent the good part of an afternoon listening and talking and just "hanging" with him. I'm so tired of corporate everything, that part was especially fulfilling. ( same goes for Frank Van Alstine).

Since you seem to have started the exact some post here and on AVS  :? I will mention the same thing again. Lipinski sound is not an ID company; they are a Stereophile Class A rated speaker and sold through a dealer network. You can discuss their speakers with them but you still work with a local dealer. You should really remove their name from your post.

You neglected Stirling Broadcast seller of the LS3/5A V2 loudspeaker.  I have nothing but praise for the speaker that Doug Stirling makes and the service he provides.  He drove around 150 KM round-trip to deliver the speakers to me in person when I visited the UK and when a surge of DC fried the mid-range drivers he replaced the drivers, tested the speakers and returned them to me in less than a week (I am in Denmark. He is in SW England) for less than £100 total, shipping + new box + repairs.  This speaker has given me endless hours of enjoyment, worth far more than the price I paid.  He belongs in the hifi hall of fame along with Mike Sanders and Gilbert Yeung.

How did this thread  get this far without mention of ACI?  They've probably been doing it longer than most -- and there's a reason for why they're still at it?  Listen to their speakers, experience their customer service, and check out their warranties.

I have owned ACI speakers for several years. The are the only speakers I have never thought of trading. Mike D. is great with customer service. I loved them so much that I am a moderator on the ACI circle here (even though I am not an employee of the company)
