Hi James:

I lived with Model IIIs for many years. My friends had Acoustats as well. One for over 20 years. I loved mine dearly while I had them.

Years later I obtained a pair of 1+1s. When I compared them to some Apogees I had I preferred the Apogees as they were more lively and exciting. The Acoustat neutrality actually bored me. The IIIs are not as super neutral as the quads you have but may give more bottom end and impact. Although electrostat lower bass is a little looser than very good cones.

I later listened to another pair of Acoustats that had crossovers and bass woofers. Forget the model. Yawn. While serving up nice detail they just lacked dynamics. Plus, they were not set up with enough room behind them.

Personally, I would not lather about the IIIs unless you can find the original X with the built in amps. But that does not make sense for your sitiuation being in the amp business. You will also have the head in the vice wtih them. Today's dynamic speakers can serve up electrostatic detail and also dynamic impact. Although most lack the dipole soundstage and air.

I think more important than which electrostat speaker you run is the room you give them. That's where the majic is. Give them at least 6' off the wall, 8-12' even better. Spread them wide and enjoy.

Just saying.

Hi Ronny,

Thanks for the input.  I agree... I really feel most panels have many attibutes but dynamic compression is a big problem.  I was just told today my Magnepan MG3.7' are on the way so I am excited about trying them :thumb:

I would be more excited about the 3.7s than the IIIs for sure.

well, yeah!

the Acoustat's (well set-up) projected a beautiful image at the sweet spot only, with wonderful detail and not so wonderful dynamics.  the latter was definitely helped by high-pass filtering (passively) the panels and adding a subwoofer, but it remained the speakers' main drawback.

I owned Acoustat Spectra 33's for ten years.  Those speakers drove me crazy!!

They had so much potential, BUT, they turned out to be just to damn hard to get them to sound right throughout all the musical registers.  There was always a frequency spectrum that was either too pronnounced or thin/threadbare.

The Spectras revealed EVERYTHING, and then some.  Any flaws in the electronics, and man, they showed up in spades.  The only amps that seem to work well with them were either Thresholds or high powered tube amps.

I finally sold them, and while I occasionaly miss some of what they could do, I do not miss all the issues to get them set up and working well.

With any Acoustat it's ALWAYS the same - - -  gabage in = garbage out.  :) :) :)
