Nathan - what do I have to do to get a copy?

Just PM me your mailing address. That leaves one more CDR unspoken for.  After that if anyone else wants one I will be happy to do it, but - I will have to ask for a small fee to cover shipping and materials. (let's say 5 bucks) Thanks!  Look at it this way; it's cheaper than iTunes and you get a real product instead of a computer file. :P

My shows were Tues nite and Saturday nite. :o   College radio, and they didn't know what they were getting themselves into.  The only non metal I played was Neil Young, and then only one song:  Sugar Mountain.  There was one frat house that always had my show tuned in, and they'd sometimes request that song.  Even during my Metal Hellion Years I could still appreciate that Neil was the man.

A good sound system should be able to play whatever you throw at it, but it does have to be able to crank out the bass and dynamics in spades if it even hopes to reproduce the slam and bombast of heavy metal.  I bet a speaker like the VMPS Tower II would be great for hard rock.

Resolution is also important; a lot of heavy metal records are very dense mixes, with lots of information vying for driver space.  If the speaker can't resolve complex lines at high volume, then you do get the "moronic noise" that people often accuse the genre of being.

I'm pouring over my collection, Nathan, trying to decide just what type of stuff I'd put on a sampler.  I get the definate impression you're more into the fist-in-the-gut stuff, right?  Most of the stuff I listen to is a little more melodic, and more "produced" than the stuff on your sampler.  Of course, bands like Pile Driver and Venom are exceptions to that...

I could use a good version of "Beyond The Realms Of Death" by Priest if you've got it. My MP3 has got a dropout on it.  It's your call Rob, whatever you want!

Any of you metal heads know what Iron Maiden album 'Alexander the Great' is on?  I didn't seem to find it on their popular albums.

"Somewhere in Time" 1986.
Not their best effort but others disagree...

I thought Somewhere in Time was a great album.
'course that was '86 and the peak of my metal days.

Great show that year.   Just saw them again this summer- still a good show.

I'm a Paul DiAnno Maiden fan. I never warmed up to Dickinson's screeching voice. Although all early Maiden stuff is great despite of Bruce.
From the mid to late stuff (starting with somwhere in time) I liked 7th son of a 7th son the best. I know a LOT of guys who despise this album. I thought it was great, very melodic...
To each his own...

I just noticed Nathan's insert work... going over each song and group and explaining what they mean to him...

Nathan,
I'm overwhelmed... This combined with listening to Candlemass at work are almost forcing a tear down my cheek.

I saw Voivod in a club here in Sioux Falls, shortly after Nothingface came out; man, they rocked!  No, I definately haven't forgotten about them. 8)   I dunno if NathanM has listened to 'em, but I'll include that on a sampler, too.

Too bad that club (the Pomp Room) closed a few years back.  I've seen Danzig, Great White, Voivod, Fight, April Wine, Tony MacAlpine, Badlands, and more others than I can remember down there.  RIP, Pomp Room!

VoiVod is great!  I've got Dimension Hatross on vinyl, and Nothingface and Angel Rat on CD.  I thought it was interesting that Jason Newsted joined them.  It's funny to imagine a group like VoiVod getting major attention because of that.  I don't know if this has happened or not, but you'd figure they would get more interest in any case.  I haven't heard any of the new songs, though.

*sniff*  Glad to hear it!  I bought the Candlemass reissues but they have been semi-wrecked with "remastering".  That almost brought a tear to my eye, but not the good kind!  But the interviews on the CDs are VERY cool and funny.  Especially if you're like me and enjoy listening to foreign accents.  Have you heard Nemesis Andrikos?

Unfortunately, they completely bodged the artwork!!!  Fucking rescreened the covers!  Moires everywhere!  Unbelieveable.  You can get free slides from the National Gallery for the Thomas Cole paintings fer cripes sakes.  Sheer laziness.  And the color balance is all over the map.  You put the original side by side with the reisssue and it's night and day.  Grrr.

Yeah the booklet is kind of a tight squeeze in that slimline case, but it does come out, trust me!  I originally used the cover stock for the whole thing which didn't fit at all in the slimlines!  The matte paper is nice though, I love how it looks like black velvet.

Nathan,
I can't say I've heard of Nemesis... Maybe I have and the long lost memories are somewhere in the deepest reaches of my brain. Right behind diaper changing, baby song singing and football :)
Oh well, given the right stimulus, it may come back one day... :)

Also another great band is Amorphis that combines Norse Mythology with death growls, melodic riffs and pretty decent vocals. Not quite Candlemass Operatic lung-busters, but good nevertheless...
BTW, Candlemass' first album "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" where they used a singer for hire (he really good) is one of my favorite albums. Give it a spin.

As for VoiVod, what can I say... These guys are just incredible... True pioneers and inimitable. Gotta love'em! :)

Nemesis is the band Leif Edling had before Candlemass.  Metal Blade reissued it at some point.  It's called "Day Of Retribution".  Quite awesome.

I was never a big fan of Epicus, but it is a good album.  I just think Messiah is a much better singer and his performance on the 1st live album, especially "A Sorcerer's Pledge" is so much better than the version on Epicus IMO.  I also find Leif's vocals to be better than Messiah's on the songs from the Nemesis album.  It depends.  "Incarnation Of Evil" is just wretched in comparison to "Black Messiah" on the Nemesis disc. (same song, different title)

I have "Tales From The Thousand Lakes" by Amorphis but never heard anything before or after that.  Good record, but I thought it could be better.  I like the guy who does the clean vocals more than the 3rd rate growls.

I'll check Nemesis out. Thanks!

Oh yeah, where was the promised slayer song?
If I'm not mistaken was it raining blood?
That album "Reign in blood" is still to me the most intense 30minute listening experience ever... wow!

The new-ish remaster of Reign In Blood sounds fantastic, but I don't think it can touch their magnum opus, South of Heaven.  That album was an f'in masterpiece.

I never could stand Paul DiAnno; his voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.  Maiden definately traded up, IMOHO.  I listened to "Battle Zone" when we got it at the radio station (K.A.O.R.), but I didn't care much for it.

I just heard the new Armored Saint disc, Revelation, today; pretty damned good.  Their original guitarist died awhile back, but they've reformed and carried on.  Aside from better production, they sound the same as ever, but maybe even heavier.

What gives?  I PM'd you a couple of days ago... I'd gladly give $5 to have this CD.  I forgot to include my address, though... and I offered a Pat Boone CD as a thanks... I guess I could be blackballed from talking about metal at AC now.

Believe me guys, $5 is NOTHING compared to the TLC that went into this CD.
I hope this begins a wonderful tradition of Sampler CD's by Audiocirclians.
And it doesn't even have to be metal. I have a Dead Can Dance sampler on the brain... :)
Having said all that, I seriously doubt any sampler (other than Nathan's NEXT effort) will come even close to the quality of the Sampler that started it all... Thanks Chuck! :)
