External Power Supply for Modded Players
« on: 20 Jun 2008, 02:55 pm »
I will be receiving my modded player back shortly with the external PS.  I looked on the site but could not determine what is the current Rectifier Tube used in the PS.  After listening to the player in stock form for a month or so, I plan on rolling some tubes to see the differences.  I already have some additional 5687 tubes for the player to try out and wanted to pick up another rectifier tube or two for rolling.  I do not want to purchase a second of the same tube, hence my question.

Thanks
Dan

Dan,

I am pretty sure it's 5AR4s on all his tube PS.  I got some extra Mullards you can try -- no need to spend a ~$100 just to find out.

Woodsyi...Thanks for the reply.  I know about the 5AR4's but wondered which brand they were using.  Sovtek, Amperex, Mullard, etc.

I do not want to purchase an additional tube to roll and get the same brand

When I had a 999ES with external PSU I believe the tube was a Sovtek.
My tube rolling resulted in a Mullard NOS 5AR4 giving the best combination with 5687's.

I've also been using a Mullard 5AR4 (NOS, F31 date code) for a while now with great success on the tubed p/s for my Modwright 9000ES.  Recently, after reading the threads here, I have picked up a Tung-Sol 5U4G which I have to admit sounds very, very good.  More swapping is needed, but heck, I think I prefer it at this time, and it was substantially cheaper.  I also picked up a bunch of different 5U4G, 5U4GB NOS tubes to play with.....

So Sovtek is the stock brand of rectifier tube the PS comes with.... ?????????

Do any of you run dampeners on your Rectifier tube?

I personally like Herbie's for my other tube usage and plan on ordering a couple for the 5687, and might as well order one for the 5AR4 while I am at it.

Herbie's new 'Sonic' line are pretty good and REALLY hold on tight compared to his previous versions.

The Sovtek 5AR4 are no longer the stock rectifier supplied with the Sony 999/9100 PS.

I believe it is 'Ruby'.

It is Chinese made, sounds good & has been very reliable.
