It uses the plastic-knob binding posts that normally comes with Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer receivers.

well it sounded pretty audiophile to me.  I was shocked.

This hobby is getting cheaper, I like it :-)... Ordered one too.

Here is another review of similar component:

http://www.laaudiofile.com/sdex111.html

Its switching frequency is doubled (5.6Mhz) when compared to the SD-SG11.

The picture of the back panel in the review above shows good binding posts ("sturdy set of binding posts that work well with banana plugs, spade lugs or bare wire"). Seems that it can accept any power cable.

I just bought one for our bedroom system.   What speakers are you guys using with yours?

I just ordered one over the weekend from Minidisco (with the 2nd day air shipping promotion, so it should be arriving today) and will be trying it with a spare pair of Aurum Cantus Leisure 2's I currently have.  They are 89db, so it'll be interesting to see how they do...

I've been playing the Sharp with my relatively inefficient (88db) Ellis 1801's and they play very loud and .  Much better than any receiver (midfi) has ever been able to drive these speakers.  It appears to be a bit different than the one pictured in that review.  It's a two box unit with the power supply in the amp box.  The amp has a fan that is very quiet and the unit runs very cool.  It doesn't have the strong bass of my AVA gear but the highs are pretty sweet and it has plenty of power.  Unless it bursts into flame within six months, it's probably the best $129 I have spent on audio in recent memory.

Haven't received mine yet, but my kid is running the Klipsch RB-5.  96db sensitive--you wanna talk about getting down, getting funky! Holy crap the windows shake upstairs.  He's in block rockin' beat heaven.  This is easily the best deal I've ever got in hifi.

I'm thinking about trying some Moth Audio Cicadas, 12ohm 92-3 db, or some Cain and Cain Abbeys.  How's that for one weird set up?  I'm gonna take my time though and try to do this right.  I say we start thinking about mods!!

Does anyone know where the SD-SG11 can still be got at 129.99?
Both minidisco and planet minidisk has since raised their prices.

Sunny.

I found this place with a Yahoo search.  Not sure how credible/reliable they are:

Yowzas!!!  This little piece of cuteness sounds great!  Using AE Aegis EVO 1s, Audience Conductor speaker wire, and a Spinal Cord power cord.

Huh!?  Small, Cute, CD and MD, Tuner, cool display with 7 different changeable colors, pretty damn good sound, good bass, timer, clock, real binding posts, real RCA interconnects, real IEC for power cords...  for $129, am I losing it??

I got to get a few more...

If you're an avid user of ebay and trust it enough, they are going for about $129.

TOLD you guys!  It sounds great, but no one beleives me

I am still having so much fun with mines.  I set it to sleep every night and automatically play a CD every morning at 7:30am - 8:30am.  What a relaxing way to wake up..  Now only if I can get it to make me coffee.

A couple questions, djklmnop.  Is the CD player top loading, or where do the discs load?  And where do they load with MD?

Also, does the Sharp have any digital or analog inputs at all, or are you stuck with just the onboard players?

Thanks!

Rob,

Both the CD and minidisc are top loading (see pic earlier in thread) and the unit has both analog and optical inputs.

Damn, that figures.  The spot I'd put it really can't accomodate a top loader, and I don't know where the hell else I could set it... Still, at the price I may figure something out.

hm...this is intriguing for a bedroom system. I just don't know what speakers to use. I'm open to suggestions? Anyway to get speakers for < $100?

I ordered a Sharp SD-H111 for $126 + $35 shipping.

I did not feel the need for mini disc of SD-SG11. But it has five channel amplification (5x25w), double switching frequency (5.6 Mhz), DVD playback, bass managment, component video output. Like the SG11, it has gold plated  binding posts, IEC for power cords,  ...

I could not resist, I have to try the 5.6MHz 1 bit amp and compare it to my Sony AVD-S50ES. I hope to get a nice surprise about the sound for stereo (it wil drive my VMPS 626R). Anyway, this compact unit  will make a nice DVD backup system and/or bedroom system.

Sad that this Sharp does not support SACD.

You can get a pair of Omage AV21 for around $100 shipped. I haven't heard these speakers yet so can't comment on them but there is a lot of good review about them at AVSforum. Heck, for $100 what you got to loose :-)

See link for opinions on Omage AV21.

I just bought a pair of the Omage Av21 from Master-vox.com for $128 CAD shipped ($97 USD).   That is pretty hard to pass up if they are even decent.  I am going to use this system for the bedroom so it isn't likely that I'd need really high perf speaks.

Searched around a bit and stumbled onto the SD-SH111 as well yesterday -- pretty amazing to grab a 5.1 receiver w/Dolby Digital/DTS/ProLogicII, AM/FM Tuner, Amplifier, and DVD Player for $126 (!) Also does the sampling at 5.6 instead of half that for the other unit...

I'm thinking of grabbing one as well.....

Several other models in the $100-$200 price range such as:

SD-EX200 CD/AM/FM system with litte crappy speakers for $165...
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/efunctional/sd-ex200.html

SX9860 150x2 Amplifier for $162
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/efunctional/sx9860.html

SD-EX111 50w CD/AM/FM for $230
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/efunctional/sd-ex111.html

HT-AT4000DV 6x100w, 5-Disc DVD Home Theatre $366
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/efunctional/ht-at4000dv.html

HT-AT3000DV 6x100 DVD Home Theatre w/Speakers $314
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/efunctional/ht-at3000dv.html

For speakers, on the dirt cheap, my first thought was the Creative Sound SuperElf's or 1.5's, which I think go for $75 or $100 a pair or so....

Second thought was to search around for someone who has a pair of NHT SuperZero's on closeout somewhere.. Occasionally find them for $140-150/pair...
