ASC Sound Panels -best method for ceiling install
« on: 29 May 2008, 07:27 pm »
The advice from the ASC calls for a "water soluble adhesive" to attach the sound panels to the ceiling. The actual instructions use the word "glob".Usually, when you see this word you know things are going to get interesting.Prior to "globbing" i thought i would i would peruse the group mind of the acoustics circle and ask for thoughts on securing these panels, via the adhesive,or other, non glob methods.Anyone dealt with this particular install? does anyone suggest as particular adhesive? To glob or not to glob, that is the question. The ceiling is just typical drywall plaster. Many Thanks!

If you use adhesive, it's basically permanent.  If it were me, I'd use a 'blob' to glue some hooks/eyes onto the back of the panel so you can take them up and down easily without destroying the panels or the ceiling.

Are these the panels with the border and beveled edges?  I used adhesive hook-and-loop to attach mine to the ceiling, but you have to be careful when removing that adhesive stuff, lest you pull off the texture as well!

Thank you for your reply. They are on the way as we speak, and i assume they have that bevel that the Sound Planks have.Your idea is a good one.Was there any issue sound-wise as to a small distance between the ceiling and the panel,i mean, there has got to be an inch or so from ceiling to hook to panel ?
Thanks!

They should work just the same way they would on the ceiling flush - except you'll get a little more extended bottom end abosrbtion from the air gap.

Jazzcourier,

I'm not sure exactly which panels you are referring to by ASC (their website doesn't have a "sound panels," they have "Mixcloud," "SoundPlanks," and "Panel Traps") so it's difficult to make a recommendation not knowing what the frame construction is like.  I agree with what Bryan has stated, a couple of inches of air space between the panel and the wallboard would be most beneficial.

In my experience, I found the studs and used drywall screws (heads painted white to match ceiling color) and 50# kite string in one application and in another application I used a two inch diameter by 8' long thick walled cardboard tubes held up with the kite string and the panels resting on top of them.

I wanted to stay away from glue and felt it would be much easier to patch the screw holes than a torn wallboard surface.

Good luck,
L

Issue #22 of Positive-feedback has a review of the ASC sound panels and they are on the website,as well. The "string theory" is another good idea. These are all very promising suggestions and solutions, especially knowing that a small space may,or will be beneficial to the sound and bass control.I have 6 real traps up behind the speakers and to the sides on the walls and they,as you may know are distanced from the wall by a buffer cube and they have been very effective. To continue on the ceiling with this principal is cause for inspiration. This brain trust never fails!

Oh, those ASC Sound Panels.... :duh:

Apparently the link I had saved in my favorities sent me to their Studio page.   ????  I hadn't visited their site for some time because I chose a different vendor based on cost and the fact I was treating two rooms.

I recall reading about those panels in Positive-feedback too.

The frame is perfect for the "Sting Theory" depending on how your studs run and where the first reflection area is in relation to your listening position.  OBYW, picture frame wire will work too.  I ended up changing to it in one room and painted the wire white to make them blend into the color of the ceiling.

Good luck.

I have used trim head screws to hang acoustical panels from my ceiling. Just use long screws set at an angle into the studs. The very small screw head can either hidden in the fabric or filled with putty and painted to match.
