Daedalus DA-1 - $3500 OBO + actual shipping

For sale, one pair of Daedalus DA-1 speakers made from solid oak boxes with walnut front panels.

These are perhaps the best looking speakers I've ever seen, much less owned, but with two other pair of speakers already in the house and another pair ordered, something has to give.

The are not the current DA-1.1s (not sure the differences), but believe the retail price was $6400 vs. $6800 for a pair of 1.1s.

These speakers are also offered with matching pair of oak speaker isolation stands, a $300 option.

The sound is very open with an expansive soundstage; detailed, yet forgiving.  These were my longtime favorite holiday speakers in that they were forgiving enough to enjoy some of my less-than-stellar seasonal recordings, but not at the sacrifice of detail and dynamics.  They respond equally well to low-powered tube and high-powered SS amplifiers, but my favorite Daedalus amp was the Butler Audio Monad monoblocks.  However, they performed surprisingly well with the Spectron Musician III Signature Edition.

The specifications listed below are for the current 1.1 model, but I believe the specs for mine are very similar.

SPECS: (copied from the Daedalus Audio website)

Drivers; High Frequency  (X2)    1" Eton Dome tweeters offset 10 deg.
Drivers; Mid-range          (X1) 5" custom modified Fostex full range loudspeaker
Drivers; Low Frequency   (X2)    8" Daedalus Audio Dynamic Loudspeaker
Frequency Response       28 to 22kHZ
Sensitivity                     97 db 1w/1m
Continuous Power Rating 350 watts RMS 600 watts peak
recommended power      8 - 600 watts
Impedance                    6 ohms
Tweeter Switch              flat, -1db, +1db
Enclosure Type              Tuned Port Aperiodic Vent (Rear)
Enclosure Material          Solid Hardwood with Dovetail Joints, 1 1/4" Baltic Birch & Solid Walnut baffle, heavily hardwood braced
Cabinet Finish                Hand-rubbed Oil Varnish Finish
Vampire binding posts     Silver/Copper wiring
Dimensions (H"xW"xD")   45"x11"x16"
Weight                          Approx. 102 lbs. each
Warrranty                     5 years

The original shipping containers were not very solid and were trashed in-transit.  Consequently, I will be willing to meet potential buyers within 4-hours driving distance (one way) of area code 39705.  Should the speakers require shipping, buyer will be responsible for all shipping costs, including materials and insurance.  They're heavy (100+ lbs ea.), so I'd much prefer a local pick-up/meet.

Thanks for looking.

Gorgeous wood, extremely high WAF and easy to drive.

A decent professional review of the DA-1.

And another.

And several private owner reviews @ AudioReview.com.

I have heard these speakers (not this exact pair) and when setup and driven by good amplification they are excellent!

Add the obvious cabinetry work to their sonic performance and you have a heck of a combination.

Please seriously consider these speakers.

I heard these at RMAF'06 with Ryan's Dragon monoblock amps; this was a room to return to for the pure bliss of musical enjoyment.
Great Price too!

Thanks for the comments, fellas.  Not too many have heard these speakers, and as zybar alluded, even fewer have heard just how good that can sound.

These really are tremendous speakers, folks; great sound with an old world charm and aesthetics your significant other will love.

thanks for the compliments guys!
just to clarify the new DA-1.1 and the DA-1 use different drivers and crossover designs, there are also internal cabinet differences. the external specs are the same. here are some differences in the other specs:

DA-1

tweeter switch +3db/0db/-3db

sensitivity 96db

Vifa tweeters/ custom Daedalus 5" midrange/ old version Daedalus 8" woofers

i remember that pair ( the first pair Jim ordered were destroyed by Fed Ex so i searched for some special wood for these)  the walnut baffles are spalted walnut which i've rarely seen, really beautiful. these are one of a kind cabinets.

fwiw, the packaging for these has evolved and is pretty rugged now...

see you at RMAF,

Lou

And thank you, PTB.   :notworthy:

Mr. Daedalus Audio himself, Lou Hinkley, has kindly offered an unsolicited 2-year warranty on this pair of speakers.  It doesn't cover nicks and dents, of course, but you can buy these knowing that in the highly unlikely event something were to happen to a driver or crossover component, the big guy has your back.  :thumb:
