I notice that Cans do seem to like tubes more than solid state.
Woo Audio 5 (with 300Bs) make all phones sound better than any other headphone amp I tried.

The tubes run hot to touch - but I don't think the unit generates enough heat to make a noticable temperature change in your listening room.

Hey Lee,

I'm really not sure what is on or off topic here but have you seen this new tweak? It appears our friends from Acoustic Revive may be doing their own "take" on the technology found in the Quantum Symphony Pro. or is this something different?

No, I hadn't seen that  item before.  I haven't been keeping tabs on the Acoustic Revive stuff lately.  I'll take a look at the original AR web page and see if I can make heads or tails of what it is supposed to be doing.  Some of their stuff tends to defy logic, but people sure seem to love it.

As an aside, I had to pull my Little Dot MKIV SE apart today to change a couple of resistors today, so while I was in there I changed a few other things...you know me, I just can't leave well enough alone.  In any event, these few mods really opened this amp up quite a bit more.  Pretty cool.  This thing really punches above it's weight class.  As the tweaks burn in, I expect it to even open up a bit more.

Thanks for the recommendations, Lee... all the way back on page 2! :)

(Sorry, I've been swamped lately and reading AC very sporadically.  Honestly, I'm only reading now because I have a cold and can't sleep!)

The headroom amp/DAC is out of my range for an office system, but I'll do a bit of research on the others.  Keep me posted on the other units you have coming in, as more options are always good!

I'm still half tempted by the idea of a modded DAC60 and with a decent headphone amp board dropped in.  The case seems like it would have room.  Mgalusha turned me on to the Twisted Pear and a couple of others lesser known kit suppliers of good reputation, so there are more options out there than I realized.  Wayne's idea of using a Burson Buffer is also interesting.  Of course, I'd have to find someone to do the modding... hmmm... I wonder who I might find...

By the way, if you have any thoughts on recabling AKG701s, let me know.  It seems silly to think about before getting a decent amp/DAC, but then again, it may be easier!

Thanks!

Hey Brian,

If you do want to try the below, I have an extra headphone amp board out of a Zhaolu 2.5 that you can have.  It's not the upgraded board, but the original that I took out of one to put in the upgraded board.  Just let me know where to send it if you want to mess with it.  My time to do mods for the next month or two will be pretty limited until I get my wife back on her feet.  After that, hmmm...might be a cool project.

I like the 701's, but haven't personally tried a re-cable on them.  I think I will order in an extra pair and try it to see how it comes out, maybe the re-cable will allow that extra little bit of oomph in the bass through that I miss on the 701's.

Disclaimer--I sell 701's.

I had the Zhaolu 2.5 and I thought it was ok - not bad.
I sent it to Tube Research Labs (No tubes in the mod) - to do the best they can.
The difference was huge - then due to system changes - I did not end up needing an outboard DAC and ended up getting TRL modded Sony 900 (it just does everything right). The guy I sold the TRL modded Zhaolu 2.5 to compared it with the BYOB Altman DAC and he said that TRL modded Zhaolu was in every way much better.

Now, my whole system is TRL (the cables are amazing but they are thick and hard to work with.)

Recabling, I believe, is a must to get the most out of your headphone.
I got recabling done for AKG701s for more bass - I did not get that but I got everything else in spades - more transparency, dynamics, better soundstage, more open etc. a better headphone overall sans bass ;)

Cheers
Sunil.

Interesting.  It sounds like I will have to experiment a bit to see what I can get out of these.  I just want them to have a touch more bass impact.

Peace,

Lee

Hey Everyone,

Well, I'm sure this is not news to many of you but I just bought my first can of Deoxit Gold GX5...WOW! I have used many different treatment/cleaners but this stuff is just amazing. I sprayed it on all my power cords end plugs, interconnects and headphone terminations. The  change was immediate. I am hearing a greater clarity, weight and just flat out SLAMming SQ! If you don't have this stuff it is a no brainer "low dough" tweak!

Did you use DeOxit first and then ProGold?

Yes, I did. I am also a fan of Xtreme Quicksilver too. From what I remember, you did not like any "crap" on your IC's and PC's you built for me, right?

Ha!  I don't know if I quite put it that way...  Or, knowing my proclivity to not mince words, I probably did!

I like the Caig products very much.  The Caig and the GC Electronics 801-B are about the only contact enhancement products I do recommend regularly, though.
