Line Array Sub
« on: 25 Apr 2008, 12:45 am »
I was going to ask Danny this, but I might as well add to the pool of knowledge here.

I'm a big fan of line source speakers.  I have Martin Logans and I'm thinking of building LS9s.

I know a big issue with the Logans is the integration of a line source panel and a point source woofer.  I suspect there are similar issues pairing any line source full-range speaker with a point source sub.

So my question is, could I build Danny's new subs as line source subs?

I know this wouldn't be cheap, as it would require multiple drivers and multiple amps (not to mention the materials cost, or the WAAF), but,

i.  would this be worth it;

ii. how would I configure it, I know there's a formula for how many drivers in parallel and how many in series...; and,

iii. how could I build the cabinet, pressumably I'd have to do it as separate stacked boxes (maybe of two drivers per box) on top of each other?

Thanks for any and all tips.

One of the advantaged of the LS9's is that they play into the 20 Hz region.  Unless you are wanting to recreate a 5 Hz volcano or a cannon from a DVD, a sub is not needed.  Having said that, if you want one, you should have one .

We did these a few years ago for a customer with Alpha's who wanted more bass. These used 4 of the GRSW12 and PR per side.
I would do the same thing with the new woofer running off a single plate amp installed in to each cabinet.
With the woofers run series, parallel you end up with around 8ohm and the amp will work great.

With the standard SW-12B subs, you can run a whole line of them in series parallel if you want to.

The Direct Servo subs can't be run in series though. They have to be run in parallel. However, you can run two SW-12-08's on one amp and you can run three SW-12-16FR's on one amp.

Once you get into those long, low frequency wavelengths it is not an issue.

Which type of rhythmik/GR plate amp is required to run 3 SW-12-16FR's?
There are many versions of rhythmik website, really confuse me.
I am planning to build an open baffle sub with 3 SW-12-16FR's, can't figure out where to start on which Rhythmik/GR amp.
Once you combine 3 SW-12-16FR's, should i get 4 ohm, 8 ohm or 14 ohm plate amp version?
Kindly advice.

Cheers

You can see the amp right here: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=47310.160

You can order it with your subs. Just give me a call and I'll fix you up.
