This is essentially a copy/paste from a thread I began in the Discless Circle, but Crimson thought I should post it here as well. 

Without further ado, here's the problem -

According to this thread (scroll to the bottom), the problem with connecting a SB to an Apple Time Capsule-based network was resolved with the introduction of firmware v88.  My question is, how do I go about upgrading the firmware?

I used to do it all the time when I used a PC, but now that I'm using a Mac, I don't know where to begin.

I had hoped Logitech/Slim Devices would update SqueezeCenter 7.0 with the new firmware, but I've found no evidence to that end.

I've received *tremendous* support and assistance from the facilitator of The Apple Core, but aside from possibly getting a PC on the network, he doesn't know how to fix the problem either. 

UPDATE:  My wife (a network admin) tried connecting my old PC with a Netgear USB wireless adapter, but it failed to connect, too.  A quick search turned up a *LOT* of people complaining about the Netgear adapter not working with the AirPort Extreme, which is basically the same as a Time Capsule minus the hard drive.

Any ideas?  Anyone?

Ping avta and other users running a SB. What are we missing? There has got to be a straightforward way of upgrading the SB firmware with a Mac.

I've also had to initially connect the SB to the server using no encryption, establish a link, then go back and use the encryption.  That let the SB see my server every time after that.  Don't know if that helps you.

Sometimes the IP addresses jump around if you have automatically set DHCP. Push the left arrow until it goes back to network selection, Scroll down to see if there is a new IP address  listed. Then use the new one.

Further, I don't know where to find firmware v88, or where to put it on my computer once I do find it.  From what I've been able to gather today, until the firmware v88 is loaded, the SB will not connect, period.

I did try to connect with all security and MAC filtering disabled, but to no avail.  It sees the network, but it times out with every attempt to join.

I'm not sure I completely follow you, Mike.  Bear with me a moment while I recap my day's work.

• There are plenty of IP addresses allocated for the SB, and it does see the network... it just won't connect to it.  I don't know much about networking, but I'm not sure an IP address is the problem. 

• According to the link to the Slim Devices "bug" page in my first post, a new firmware (v88) was made available 2 days ago which will correct this known connectivity issue. 

• Lastly, the only problems I can readily identify at this moment in time are that (1) I don't know where to get the firmware update, and (2) if/when I do get it, I don't know where to place it in my computer so the SB will connect.

Again, I know just enough about networks to be really dangerous.  Have I missed something in my analysis?  Do I need to try the IP address thing you mention, presumably after figuring out where to get firmware v88?

I apologize if I didn't include enough info in the first post, fellas.  It reads fine to me, but Crimson and I covered so much ground today that I'm not sure my analysis is completely unbiased.

We had a MAC laptop at work and I'm sure there is way to get to a reasonable facsimile of a DOS prompt.  Find out first what address the SlimServer box has.  I think I remember that you can assign an IP address to the SB during setup.  Just be sure that they are on the same segment and they should talk to one another for you to get whatever firmware is on the server.
I looked at the Slim Devices downloads and couldn't find Firmware 88, or I'd have sent it to you.  It goes in the Slimserver\Firmware folder btw.

Excellent suggestion! That coupled with lcrim's indication above of which folder to copy the upgraded firmware to means you're almost there. Almost.

Haven't tried yet, primarily because I doubt it'll work, but also because I can't update what I don't have.  I spent a little more time on the SD forum last night, and I think only one person managed to get the wired connection to work.  Several others tried, but failed.

Even if I were to be successful, it's largely irrelevant until such time SD/Logitech decides to make the firmware available.  I found this thread a couple of hours ago, so I'm not alone in wondering where this magical piece of software is located.

In summary,

• Slim Devices confirms the problem after getting a Time Capsule of their own.

• After claiming to have found a fix (firmware v88),

• they close the work order (Bug 7415),

• but they've yet to tell anyone where to find the supposed fix.

Odd behavior IMHO, and it makes me question the veracity of their claims.

Am I off base, or is this how things work?  Identify a problem, find a solution, advise client of solution, but don't actually offer said solution until... what?

There are lots of people who run their SB via a wired ethernet connection directly from their computer, aren't there?   

Also, does your broadband router have built-in ethernet ports?  You can hook your SB into that via wired/ethernet to do the firmware upgrade, right?

Yes, it has built-in ethernet ports.  No, I cannot do the firmware upgrade.

Again, the firmware is nowhere to be found, connected or not.  The Slim Devices folk said the problem is resolved with firmware v88, but no one knows where to find it.

I can't download - and obviously cannot upgrade to - something I can't find.

I might be able to establish a wired connection, but the room in which the SB is normally used does not have CAT 5.  Consequently, even *IF* I'm able to establish a wired connection in this room, it's of little to no help.  I'll have a wired connection in a room wherein I have no intention of using the SB, and I *still* can't download an update I can't find.

I mean no offense, Phil, but did you read my previous posts?  I'm certainly capable of overlooking the obvious, but one of us is clearly missing something.

Sorry...my bad.  I read your post as saying that you couldn't hook up your SB to your computer via an ethernet connection.  Then I looked at Crimson's response and thought that someone had identified where to find firmware 88.  My apologies...

No need to apologize.  Given the option, I'd have rather you been right, and publicly shown my mistake in a most smug and condescending manner. 

Being right in this instance isn't comforting, nor do I feel particularly victorious. 

I'm proven wrong several times a day, but rarely does it make me happy.  This would've been an exception.
