Poltergeist in my turntable

 I have an AN TT-1 and I love it. I just upgraded my pre amp to the new Rotel RC-1082. It is much quieter than my old one. The thing is now just as I am about to spin a record, I pick the tonearm off its rest, and it begins a quiet buzz...or hum. If I put it back down it is quieter. Up...humm...down....quiet.  At this point I haven't even touched the needle to the record.  The only way that I can get it to stop completely is to lift the head of the tonearm straight up until it bumps against its stopping point. Then it is silent. :x I dream of quiet playback, but this is just enough noise to be heard when I listen.  :duh: I know that this gets a lot of chatter around here. I searched the archives and found nothing of turntable poltergeists. What do you all think?

Sounds like your tonearm is ungrounded or becoming ungrounded when you lift it off the post. Perhaps a continuity check is in order. See if you have a circuit from tonearm metal to ground screw in both conditions
