imo, the law of diminishing returns w/digital playback starts at an extremely low price point, but as always -

ymmv,

Doug, that has not been my experience.  I guess it depends to some degree on the system as Steve opined above.  When we recently compared an Arcam DIVA79 to a tricked out Shanling tube CDP from Exemplar Audio, it was like night and day.  The monitors used (Intuitive Design Summits) are very transparent and the room itself was also tricked out in terms of sonic treatments....
mebbe the arcam is no good.  but, this doesn't negate the fact, imo, that good digital (oxymoron?) can be had on the cheap.  the system we listened to in our comparison is extremely hi-rez, imo, & w/excellent room treatment.  check it out here:

So I guess to answer Jim's concern about jittery vocalists, listen to more opera!

One of my favorite female vocalists. No jitter here.

I don't know Jim, I think it was from a television special.

I have 2 of her albums. The first one is self titled "Lara Fabian", the second one is titled "A Wonderful Life". They are both good. The self titled album is a little more "pop" oriented, the other one is a little more artistic.

Her subsequent albums are in French. She also sings in Italian.

I learned of her years ago when I lived in Montreal. She moved there from Belgium and pursued her singing there for a number of years, but I believe she's now living full time in Europe.

Cheers

I was impressed too. From what I could tell from wikipedia the Caruso performance on youtube is on this, but I am guessing:

So, as stated, I listened to a little opera over the weekend.   I Pagliacci with von Karajan conducting the Orchestra of La Scala on DG with Carlo Bergonzi as Canio and Joan Carlyle as Nedda plus Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice on Accent with Kuijen conducting his Petite Band and the Collegium Vocale.  Seeing how these are records and miked at respectable distances, all I really confirmed is that it’s not room resonances.   Good idea tho.  I needed a reminding of just how good these babies are.
