The best I've heard around this range would be a used modwright Sony 9000es, at this price you can get one with all the options, tubes, bells and whistles.

I'm admittedly biased towards modified gear, so you should take my rec. with a grain of salt. 

That said, the Sony's were built like tanks, and were Stereophile Class A players I believe (which is a real crock, in my opinion, given how far above and beyond a Modwright 9000 was over a stock 9000). 

I don't believe that any advances in cdp technology in that used price range over the last few years can counteract the low re-sale value of modded gear.  It helps that the Sonys were very popular, so what were $1200 Stereophile Class A players can now be found for a few hundred bucks.

Also VSE Vacuum State Electronics also Have great mods on the Sony S9000ES. This unit plays SACDS DVD's CD's but not CD-R's. If you have a lot of CD-R's this could be a deal breaker. Your modded 9000 by VSE will beat Players up to $16K. I have one and it's a dream.

Well for that money - you can get full battery mod done on Sony NV900ES by Tube Research Labs. I am waiting to receive a battery modded system while I listen to the TRL modded (non battery) unit. You may end up keeping this in your main system.

Give Paul a Call at Tube Research Labs.

TRL equipment has received a lot of good reviews, but I'm skeptical of them and their products. 

I spoke with Paul a while back about modifying a Slim Devices Transporter, and he said (paraphrasing) that it wasn't a suitable audiophile product, that it can't be made to perform well enough for use in a high-end system.

Since I own a modified Transporter, and since I've heard how good the ModWright Transporter sounds, suffice it to say I strongly disagree with Paul's assessment.  Other professional modification specialists (Dan Wright and Alex Peychev) seem wholly impressed with the Transporter's performance and capabilities, and since my experience mirrors theirs, I find Paul's comments curious at best.

Likewise, I've got both a Modwright TP and Bolder Modded SB3 - the TP is exceptional.  Guess we're spoilt for choice on this site, having access to Dan, Wayne & Steve (Modwright/Bolder/Emperical).  Even though Alex Peychev doesn't support AC I consider he has strong credentials as a talented moddifier also.  All of these guys, and my ears, can't be wrong.

I think the plain Transporter, or SB3+DAC (e.g. Benchmark) will perform more than adequately for your needs. You would then have more funds to put into other areas that might bring a greater improvement.

I realise a lot of people here don't agree, but I thought it was worth giving my view. At least when you choose you'll have a wider selection of opinions to ignore.

I think this is good advice - in addition I would also consider the Channel Islands PS for the SB3.
