Ripping Video from DVD to HD?
« on: 20 Feb 2008, 05:47 pm »
I have a few projects that require I be able to work with video files (edit, title, etc)

I have a digital video camera, burn the video to DVD, and place it in the DVD drive.

I open Microsoft Windows Movie Maker and or Windows Video Player, and try and upload (rip) the video from the DVD to the HD so I can work with it.

Doesn't work.  Some message comes up and says they are the wrong files, or some such.

They play fine in my DVD players.

I really don't want to buy another program if I can help it.

This seems like it is exactly what MS Windows Movie Maker is FOR

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like youve had an 8 track recording, downmixed it and want the 8 track back, that ain't gonna happen.

Still to rip the dvds i suggest using dvddecrypter and ripping the main movie files as a single vob, then just changing the file type to mpeg.

Nick.

PS: I'm probably wrong so ignore me if you like.

I have a "digital" video camera with digital output, that (because my computer doesn't have "firewire" inputs) I have recorded a DVD from on a SONY DVD recorder that "has" firewire ins.

I then wanted to place the recorded DVD into my computers DVD drive and upload the video to the HD to be able to edit it in the Windows Moviemaker program.

The DVD "plays" in the computer (on media player) so the DVD drive is working, but it will not recognize the video files to upload them to the HD.

Steve McCormack called and suggested I get a FireWire card for my computer and just upload straight from the camera, (THANKS STEVE :thumb:) which may be my best option.

The only way I've been able to do this is record the output of a DVD player into the line input of a Hi-8 analog video camera, then capture the videotape to the computer with an analog video capture card.

It worked but it was a pain.

I use a Plextor ConvertX model PX-M402U. It accepts digital and analog sources and interfaces with the computer via USB. You plug your video camera, VHS Player, DVD player, etc into its RCA inputs, usb to your PC, and you get an .mpg file. The quality is excellent. You can then manipulate the .mpg file with your movie maker program.

WOW! that looks simple.

Just found it at TIGER DIRECT to $49.99.

You say the DVDs you have play fine in your DVD players, but do they work on you computer in WMP/power DVD etc...?

If yes I really suggest you download dvd decrypter and set it up to rip the disc with movie files only and NO file splitting, then take the file and change the extension from vob to mpg, this is free and if it works then great, if not then you've lost nothing but some time.

You can then still spend some money.
