Amp Hum

My MPS-2 and 14B SST gives out a low humming noise. The hum is audible when standing close to the amp (for when changing volume level, switching off, etc). It is not audible at listening position. Is this normal? If not, what could be the cause and how do I fix this?

Hi Ash,

There is usually some small level of hum from a transformer -but if it is excessive you may have DC on the power line.

Thanks James. I recall reading somebody's post regarding something similar but I'm too lazy to search for the thread now. I think the Torus was recommended in his case. The hum isn't loud so I'm assuming it's normal. Having said that, I'm no electrical engineer so if you can excuse my ignorance , how does DC get into the power line and how do you avoid it?

Thanks for your time.

Ash.

GROUNDING PRACTICES IN CONSUMER AUDIO

I really know a much about this stuff as you do evidently, the "gray matter" between my ears will never be up to pare with those who have all this stuff figured out.  But if I can find something that works for me, then I'm a happy camper. Hopefully you'll be able to do the same.  :thumb:
