Hey Guys

Just ordered four 17604s from Newark.  I got them today and the plugs say Volex but the cable itself says "Tongyuan LL110486". 

I'm planning on cannibalizing the conductors in one of these for use in a Felicia power conditioner I'm building...just want to make sure its got the "good" wire in it.

I'm curious if this is consistent with other Volex PCs out there.

I remember reading on headfi somewhere that the volex 17604 sold now is not the same volex 17604 people 'raved' about in the past.  The original cable was made in US, and the current cable is made in China.  I'm not sure of how they compare though.

Thanks yo2tup.  I have some other Volex cables and the cable is quite a bit beefier.  Annoying!

I talked to Ric and he was never able to find them from current distributors, he was looking for them for his EVS amps.  I bought 10 and am happy for what I paid, but much prefer the older style ones.  Every once in a while you will see someone selling them, but they usually garner a relatively high price.

The original cords have the folded brass blades and are marked: 14-3  SJT  (UL)   E204241-C----CSA    LL2126-c  FT2  Shielded    ...FWIW

Nope.  I was under the impression that all the older 17604s were made in Mexico for Volex.  To my knowledge there are no resellers out there who have stock over the older style ones.  I contacted Ric about this and he confirmed it a few weeks back.

I'm curious if the actual wire is still Belden 19364.  I guess I'll go ahead and cut one open and find out.

Hi Jim,
Just what do expect to find after cutting one open? A little fortune cookie tag that says "genuine Belden 19364?" The Belden part number refers to the entire cable: conductors, insulation, shielding, jacket, etc. If it doesn't say Belden 19364 on the jacket then it is not Belden 19364. It may, in fact, be equivalent to, better than, or worse than Belden 19364 but I doubt you would be able to unequivocally know which just by looking at it.

BTW, Belden 19364 is hardly the best bang for the buck power cable. That honor belongs to Belden 83xxx series. Better shielding, better insulation (Teflon instead of PVC), lower inductance, two, three, or four conductors, the latter allows star-quad geometry, etc. Just my opinion.

Yes!!  I did expect a fortune cookie tag, but to my surprise there was not one!  19364 was not on the jacket.
