Anyone willing to build or sell me a gainclone?
« on: 3 Feb 2008, 01:05 am »
Anyone here willing to build me a gainclone? Or sell me one you've already built? Or refer me to someone who will?

I'm curious to try this out having recently (finally) gone to a non-oversampling DAC. Unfortunately my soldering station is kaput and I don't have the time at the moment due to my job.

I'd want an integrated amp (built in volume control, that is). I only need one input. I'd probably want 50 or more watts per channel but an LM1875 with around 20 watts is probably OK, too.

Send me an PM and let's discuss.

I'm in America.

If you have one you're willing to sell, please include pictures if possible and all of relevant details (caps and resistors used, power supply type, etc. etc.)

Thanks.

Contact Tim Rawson.  If I recall correctly his email is Rawsonte at yahoo dot com.  He is also Rawsonte on Audiogon and is active a little here, but I can't recall his handle.

He is very well known for his gainclones, specifically he has very good prices and does top notch work.  I personally own 2 of his clones, one is a ~60wpc stereo amp and the other is a 200wpc BPA200 4ch clone.

I also second Rawsonte.  Once in a while he sells his wares in Audiogon for not too much money.  The cosmetics are plain, so is the finish of most of his wares, but for the price is unbeatable.

BTW, I own one of his mini Aleph amps.  :thumb:

Hi there, i do have a Gainclone, built by Tim himself for me.
It's five channels at 100wpc.  I am using it in bi-amp situation, and well, have had it for about a year now.
It's all black...if interested, PM me and I'll send you some fotos!

Rawsonte indeed, his gear pops up directly from him on occasion, and sometimes used too.  I would watch Audiogon.

There are 2 of his mini-Alephs on the Gon right now, but I did not notice any gainclones.

Sometimes they come up on Head-Fi too, as lots of builders over there for head amps, and home amps.

greg7, you might try PMing vman71, I think he may have replaced a GainClone built by Stan Warren with a SET. He might be willing to part with his GainClone if he has no further use for it. He discusses the sound he is getting from his system in this thread http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=49797.0
A picture of the amp can be seen in his second post. The GainClone is the small cube with wood side panels next to the tube amp on the floor.
I heard this amp a couple of years ago and it easily drove my Teton GS speakers. The amp will do 60watts into 8ohms and 120watts into 4ohms.

The GainClone for sale on ebay is a bargain. They are selling it for just a little over the cost of the parts used in it's construction.
