The most heavenly midrange magic with SET
« on: 17 Jan 2008, 02:10 pm »
I hooked up my John Hogan 6sn7/27/300b SET last weekend and it will be used in my 2ch system for the next month.  I have a rotation in my 2ch system, so that I enjoy each piece of equipment.  The previous month I was using a Tube Technology active tube linestage with a Stan Warren custom built chip amp.  Next in the line-up will be my fully rebuilt and modified H.H. Scott 222C.

I thought the tube preamp & chip amp combination was great.  Very good across the board, good extension at the frequencies and tight, solid base.

The John Hogan SET doesn't have the tight solid base but has the most beautiful midrange magic to die for.  I have not heard anything better than SET for the most heavenly midrange magic.

We'll see, next month, how the H.H. Scott 222C sounds in compairison.

The speakers I'm using are (don't laugh) Buggtussel Circa's.  Most of you have never probably heard of them, so here are some specs and a couple of pics.  The source is my highly modified EAD CD-1000 mkIII.  Some material used so far is:

James Taylor's Greatest Hits
Kenny Loggin's Greatest Hits (HDCD)
Martina McBride's Greatest Hits (HDCD)
Hall & Oates
Elton John's Greatest Hits
Dixie Chicks, LeAnn Rimes, Destiny's Child, Brandy, Norah Jones, Michael Buble
Others I can't remember off the top of my head but they all are sounding great

Well, there is something about SET isn't it?

As for the bass. That's also depend on the amp and that particular speaker combo. Yes, in general high power amp will have what people say tighter bass than SET. But I do find bass from SET more natural... and good enough for me.  But I could be a bit bias here... notice my screen name?

On what speakers?  What music material?

Josh, where you expecting answers to be.... Mighty Altec's "Voice of the Theater" and Tool?

BTW... remember you are welcome to check out my system. Yes, you could bring Tool LP to torture my system. :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Thanks, I am always curious about the setups of people who have good results with SETs (I haven't tried yet).

Buddy,  I'd like to hear some VOTTs, and I know you are itching to hear some Tool!

Thanks!  I'm almost there, couple more things to finish out the room.  I have to paint two shelves and fill in the area around the TV.

The 300b is pretty awesome.  I actually have another one that's the 45 & 2A3 version, also very awesome.

Ah, Stanley is always good to me and doesn't mind holding the remotes.  :icon_lol:

Nice room, nice setup!

Josh - I've had excellent results with a 45 amp and the Zu Def. Pros, now Def. 2s.  Having a Crown Pro amp to fill in 25 - 65 hz gives Tool all the power it deserves in a controlled, outa control kinda way.  Volume can go to loud cleanly but not extreme.  I need the titanic RWA 70.2's for that.

I hooked up my John Hogan 6sn7/27/300b SET last weekend

Hi -

Nice to hear that you're enjoying the amp, but the one pictured appears to use the 76 as, I presume, the driver tube.  Is there another with the 27?  - Pat

Hi Pat,

You're absolutely right!  It's a 76 tube on my 300b and the 27 tube is on my 2A3&45 SET amp.  From what I know, they are both IDHT tubes and quieter than DHT tubes.

So it should read 6sn7/76/300b and my other JH is a 6sn7/27/2A3&45.

BTW - Anybody who is looking/interested for a rare JH SET, I'm going to sell the 6sn7/27/2A3&45 SET, it looks really close to this 300b.  I just don't need two of them.

What is the tall cabinet in the far right hand side of the setup?  A sub?  A TL?

Single ended certainly sounds good to me over here too, though I am working with the budget Pentode version, as opposed to the more esoteric Triode.

Open baffle, single driver speakers are a great match my large room, SEP amp, and eclectic music tastes.

Love the room, looking forward to eventually finishing off my own.

The tall thing in the corner is just a plant stand that my dad made me, I just haven't put a plant in it yet.

I'm glad that I have speakers that work well with SET and tubes, it's an incredible experience.

Thanks, I'm happy with the way the room turned out and would only change a couple of minor things.

Hey!

Interesting speaker. Could you share the detail of what those drivers are and cab design? :D

As for the sound... I truly enjoy my SET and Single Driver speaker also. :inlove:

I noticed that your SET uses a 5U4GB rectifier that appears to be RCA NOS? I just received a set of 4 RCA 5U4GBs yesterday for my Manley 300b monoblocks (each one takes 2) and the improvement over the stock Electro Harmonics was AMAZING!!!!! I agree with you 100% on SET - the midrange is just magic  :D

Hi SETman,

The cabinet and crossover (based on the JBL model- I do not know specifically) are built by friend of mine. The horn is JBL LE175 with mash potato and the woofer is also JBL-D131. The midrange is actually unused (it is there to cover a hole). I love the sound of two ways horn based speakers with SET amp.  :thumb:

JBL D is easily one of the very finest transducer series ever built. I once heard it retrofit with a Tone Tubby hemp cone powered by that massive alnico magnet. Sweeeeet. Your set up? I like!! 2 way is indeed special with SET.

PM me on what you had in mind on that excess JH amp.
