Surge Protection

Before I power up my new 2-channel system (which includes a 14B SST), it would seem prudent to have a quality surge protector. Recommendations? Thank you.

Well, here is my dilemma. I primarily want surge protection for my 14B SST (& other components as well). Seems like inexpensive surge protectors are of questionable effectiveness at best. The more expensive units generally include some type of power conditioning. Since Bryston does NOT recommend power conditioners which can restrict power flow, this creates a dilemma.

James recommends Torus products. I have no doubt that these are first-rate products considering the heavy price tag. With $15K invested in my system, I certainly want to protect my investment, but not at the price equivalent to a great tube pre amp.

PS Audio, for example, builds the Duet ($295) which assumingly provides surge protection, unrestricted power & some filtering.
Has anyone had any experience with this product? Thank you.

Most good amps have protection built in to some degree where if there is a fault it shuts down.  Most power conditioners don't do anything positive to the dynamics of an amplifier.  The Torus when I used it in the store was an exception.  The proper place for just surge protection may be something at the circuit breaker box installed by an electrician.  Good power conditioners also reduce noise on the electrical line.  As I replied in the BCD-1 thread, I have power conditioners in my system already (incl. PS Audio, Richard Gray and Vansevers).  If you do a search of this forum for PS Audio or power conditioners you'll get some information.  I have a 14BSST but it is plugged into the wall.  If I get the Torus at some point down the road, I'll be able to get an additional benefit to what I'm doing now.

Here's the other thread where power conditioning was discussed:

For industrial grade, yet inexpensive, surge protection, check out Zero Surge : www.zerosurge.com/residential.html
This is the same exact surge protection built into the Torus units. They cost about 150-200 USD.

For whole house protection, try www.joslynsurge.com.
These products are used by major industries (IBM, Coca Cola, etc). Speak with a sales rep to find the right model for your dwelling. These are particularly important in high lightning areas. A tricked out model might run $2000 for a 4000 sq ft house.
