One thing that intrigued me about threads pertaining to the Emerald Physics room at the recent RMAF was how they obtained good sound without room treatments and relied rather on the speaker's DEX unit.  Is there any way to employ room equalization technologies to improve our shows?

The reason that there was less room interaction with the CS 2's is to do with the fact that they are mainly a dipole design from 1k (IIRC)down, and controlled directivity of the highs via the horn loaded tweeter, not the DCX unit.

With dipoles, there is a null to the sides of the speaker, therefore less interaction from side walls. This is simply a feature of dipole, and not anything to do with the DCX unit.

okay...thanks for the input.  I was merely curious (and obviously a little naive) about equalization units.   I know more people are trying to manipulate the potential effects of the room electronically.  I have been mildly intrigued by that since the room is an overlooked variable in trade shows and in the home...and I am a little lazy.

aa so, now that the variable of beer is out in the open, I thought that in order to adhere to the strict scientific standards that were alluded to earlier in this thread, we need to establish certain criteria that would make this speaker showcase bona fide.  We need to make sure that beer or any alcohol does not interfere with our objectivity  , and if in the unfortunate circumstance that it is present, we need to control for this variable.  We should stratify listening groups into those that are waterlogged with bear and those without out beer.... I wonder if beer would make one more prone to enjoying a first order crossover (Intuitive Design) versus a 3rd order crossover (Ridge Street Audio) versus a 4th street crossover...(SP Tech).....Anyway, our sphinters should be extremely tight for this event, otherwise no valuable information will be elicited....

Beer simply makes them appear more attractive.  Not sure what happens when they actually "speak".

Hi Gents,

     I came across this string and thought I would comment. I agree with both Brian and Bob Smith, among their other comments, concerning venue (one huge room vs home etc), what is fun ends up being a contest (people form opinions at fun events), and I personally wonder about the associated electronics. I would rather have my own separate room with my own electronics to optimize the sound in my room (if that is possible in a motel/hotel room).

A midwest fest, say in Chicago would be nice.

Hi Steve.  Thanks for the input.  At this juncture, things are headed toward what you intonated in your post:  a speakerfest.  I just need to sort out the logistics.  I plan on chatting with the folks from AK Fest, RMAF, Dave Ellis and Jim Salk to get more data.  I will try and keep everyone posted....

Just a brief update on the speaker showcase.  My wife and I are moving to the west coast and thus I will not be able to orchestrate any midwestern event.  I will leave that up to others.  I think the concept of a mini, midwestern RMAF is a kool one.  I think an added emphasis on computer-driven audio would also be nice.  Thanks to everyone on this thread for chiming in.  Happy listening....

I realize it's because you've only been registered here for just over a month, and because you hit the ground running so quickly with this project, but your announcement seemed to come out of nowhere.  It's sort of like when a new kid with all these great new ideas would move into your neighborhood, but then he'd move away before any of the ideas were acted upon (usually a military brat).  The ideas remained, but the suddenness of his departure seemed to suck the life out of them.

Hopefully that won't be the case here.

Regardless, good luck with the move, Andrew.  Selfishly, I wish you were moving somewhere down south, but not too close by; I wouldn't wish Mississippi on my worst enemy (my ex- excluded, of course ).
