TT cabling Question ??
« on: 17 Jan 2008, 02:14 am »
Does anyone have experience with DH Labs "Revelation" cabling, run between TT and phono-pre ?  I'm considering these and since they are not shielded, thus the concern. For my application it is only a half meter run, I live in a rural enviroment, with no 'hams' nearby ! Also I'm presently using a medium output MC cartridge, 1 millivolt.

Well, I can tell you that I've always have had issues with unshielded cables on the TT to Pre, maybe because I live in the Bay Area Metropolis... :duh:
but I think you WILL pick up noise/hum/RF, etc...without a shielded cable...unless the cable is cheap, you can try it out.  Do you have an unshielded cable now? if so, try it on the application and see what it does...

Hope that helps...

Also, I am a DIY guy and wouldn't spend $$$ on a cable...

my Two Cents....

That's the only place I prefer, by a wide margin, shielded cables over unshielded.  Twisted pairs (Kimber, Alpha-Core, etc) are not enough either...it needs copper foil, lots of it, to keep those meager cartridge voltages intact without additional noise riding on it into your preamp.

With line level components, the slightly 'stressed' sound imparted by shielding isn't needed...and I prefer unshielded (but don't currently use any unshielded IC's).

Shielding is generally a very good thing when it comes to cartridge signals, tho.

I'm a little further out from San Francisco than Sonny/Tuan is......but shielding with every cable, including power cords and speaker cable, was a very good thing when I lived in Washington DC about 500 yards from the main TV and Radio towers for the region  :o.

Whatever extra I had to spend on shielded cables all around was made up for the fact that I didn't at all need to subscribe to cable...regular TV channels were hi-quality with just rabbit ears on a 20" TV back then  :icon_lol:

Good luck - John

I'm an unshielded guy ... that's why I had a vasectomy  :green: aa

But seriously, the TT to phono stage wiring must be shielded. That signal is just so low and sensitive that it can pick up anything. Put a shield on it, baby! You can go "nekkid" everywhere else.

Enjoy,

Gents,  I concur, as grandpa used to say...."son, put a shield on the damn thing" !

I think I will give serious consideration to DH Labs "Air Matrix" , my current favorite 'affordable' cable.

I'm sure that's why the Cardas Tonearm wire http://www.partsconnexion.com/catalog/wire.html is two twisted pairs that are twisted together then wrapped with teflon with a braided sheild wrapped in a rubber jacket. 33Ga. perfection. :thumb:
