Trying out some GIK 244 Panels ...
« on: 29 Dec 2007, 10:49 pm »
First attempt to treat my living room is a great success!  :thumb: Thanks to all of those who made terrific suggestions (Brian, Glenn, Ethan, Duke). I have this free-standing 8' wall behind my listening seat (couch), and my head is nearly 3' from it. The room is large with no real corners or even first reflection (side) points so consensus was to treat the walls behind my speakers and my head (at least). My wife was way less than thrilled  about this so I decided to treat just the wall behind my head (for starters). This helped reduce several bad peaks and valleys at the listening position, smooth out the frequencies overall, and clear up the sound as well ... all after reintegrating my sub. A definite improvement. Well worth the money. The initial plan was to put two panels behind my head but asthetics lead me to this three panel approach.

Good deal!  Glad things worked out for you.  Integrating treatments into a family living space can be tricky but still rewarding.  Looks like you came up with a good solution both acoustically and aesthetically.

Yes well done. That is some tasteful implementation (which can be a tough balance to strike.  :)
Have you hit your side first reflection points too? Luckily that can be done with quite thin treatment.
Cheers

I knew I should have finished painting that trim before I snapped the pic!

Danny,

Are you just painting the trim?
Looks like you're getting a grain effect.

We are wanting to do the same with the crown molding in our living room.

thx

Brad,
The trim is originally stained pine with clear top coat of some sort. I am in the process of painting all of it: one coat of Zinsser Bullseye 1 2 3 - Primer, Sealer, Stain-Killer (for lazy bones like me who do not want to sand) and then two coats of semi-gloss paint. This covers extremely well and is fairly durable. Not as durable as if I had removed the glossy topcoat instead, but acceptable durability. If you're not too rough on it it should be fine. For example, repeatedly bashing the vacuum cleaner into the floor molding WILL chip the paint much easier than if you removed the gloss first. Perhaps this is why we vacuum so infrequently?

I like the room.  Do you have any problems with the peaked/vaulted ceiling?

The experts who have seen it say that it likely acts like a horn and I should treat it. However, I would not even attempt to speak to my wife about treating the ceiling. I am SURE that is a "HELL NO!"

But to answer your question: I am sorry but I don't know. This is the only "audio" room I've ever owned. That wall is the only treatment I've done to it. Everything sounds great up to 90dBs. Higher than that and SOMETHING bad happens in the room - it then seems way too loud. I suspect it IS the room and not my system, just not sure exactly what. Perhaps it is the "horn effect" of the ceiling. I cannot say for sure because I have other areas which could use treatment as well but may never get the chance to do so.

BTW: The coffee table and backless sofa between my system and my listening seat (couch near treated wall) gets shoved out of the way for seated listening sessions. Of course, grills off and beverage on.

I think I actually recommended hanging a line of panels like a long narrow cloud along that peak but you've heard the answer straight from the horses mouth so to speak...   :nono:

Brian - And a great suggestion it was. I wish I could do that treatment. I think it would look cool, especially with some soft hidden lighting. Why the "no-no" emoticon? Did I say something inappropriate? If I did it was unintentional.

Not at all - that was referring to the answer from she who must be obeyed...  :green:
