Help needed for Bryston SP1.7
« on: 19 Dec 2007, 01:47 am »
Hi there,

I had recently returned home to Singapore after being in the US and had shipped my venerable SP1.7 home. However, the packer that shipped my item didn't provide a good enough packing and something strange has happened.

All the front panel buttons seemed to have jammed and I cannot switched between sources and other function buttons. The DVD LED is permanently on which I assumed that the SP1.7 is stuck in DVD input.

The LCD display shows only the start-up screen with this message:
DSP Okay. v1.04x
   OS SP1.7 v43E

It seems to be a rather old firmware.

As this is a North American set, it is running 120v. I have it connected to my PS Audio P300 power outputting at 120v/60Hz as Singapore electricity is running at 230v/50Hz. Could the P300 be creating this problem?

I no longer have the original remote as I had misplaced it   :duh:  I couldn't afford the USD$500 replacement! Really miss the aluminium brick! That's why I couldn't test if the IR sensor is working so that I can ignore the buttons. I had programmed an MX810 with all the SP1.7 remote codes but that doesn't seem to be working. But I am not sure if it is because I had programme the codes in differently or if it is the SP1.7 that is DOA after making the trans-Pacific trip. It was working before.

Could someone advise me as to whether is this a software issue or is this a hardware (as in buttons/logic board etc) problem?

If James is around, can you advise me on what are the steps to take given the fact that I am no longer in North America and no longer have the original receipts if this problem can be covered under warranty.

Would your Singapore agent AFA have trained technicians to fix the set or will my poor SP1.7 have to make another arduous journey back to North America?

The next question is whether is it worth fixing this or should I go with the upgrade to SP2 if I have to send the set back.

Kind of frustrated as I was so looking forward to setting up my old HT here in Singapore. Any help would be much appreciated! Sorry for the long rambling post as I wasn't sure what kind of information to give.

Hi cl

Check to see if one of the two fuses on the back at the power input to the SP1.7 is not blown.

Hi James!

Wasn't expecting you to respond at such an hour. That's one of the first thing I checked after trying to reboot the set. Both the fuses looked intact to me. The wires in the fuses are still in one piece. One additional information - when I used the Power toggle in front, the lcd says "unexpected shutdown".

I am thinking worse case scenario I will probably have to send it back to either Newport or Peterborough directly, right?

Hi,

I will speak with Mike Pickett at Bryston and see what he thinks might be the problem.

Thank you so much James. I have also found your distributor in Singapore, AFA and had been in touch with Leonard Goh. He has been quite helpful. He hasn't seen the set yet but he suspect that it might be due to the front logicboard being damage in transit. But I eagerly await your response.

I am fully impress with your service and helpfullness. It speaks volumes of your company that a person so near the top of the corporate pile is providing such wonderful personal service. Thank you very much, Sir!

Hi;

If the unit was damaged in shipping, it's likely that the dress panel has been moved slightly, causing all of the buttons to bind.  This can be easily fixed by removing the top, slightly loosening the four nuts that hold the dress panel in place, and repositioning it so that all the buttons work and the knobs turn freely.  Then the nuts can be tightened again.  I have no doubt that Leonard can help you with this.

Thanks,

Mike

Thank you very much, Mike! That's a relief. I will try to bring it down to Leonard tomorrow. Thank you! I will update both you and James with this.

SP1.7 upgrading to SP2
Hi James or Mike,

After consulting with Leonard, your distributor here in Singapore, I decided to upgrade my SP1.7 to an SP2. I believe the set arrived in Peterborough probably in the early part of the first week of January. This was the set that was damaged in shipping and had the buttons all binded and un-usable.

It's been nearly 3 weeks, is the set upgraded? Just curious about how long will it take to get back to me as I am quite excited to set up again!

Thank you very much in advance for the information!

cheers

Hi James;

I can't seem to respond to the customers from home.  Can you let him know that it should be ready to ship next week.

Thanks,

Mike
