Saw Aura last night and diamond in rough would be perfect description.  Sadly Bielinsky's last movie - not perfect by any stretch but ultimately very satisfying as you untangle both character and story line webs.

This is a great topic/question that I will watch for more recommendations.  Will have to think some more about other diamonds I have seen.

You Can Count On Me with Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo.  A little treasure of writng and human frailty.

Born Equal. Colin Firth. Was really an ensemble piece. Some of the most natural, believable performances I've ever seen. Amost too real in some places.

The lives of others

- German with American subtitles one of the best movies at the Telluride film festival last year - interesting insight into what east Germany was like before the wall fell, not sure if it is based on a true story, very good movie.

The Stunt Man (with Peter O'Toole). I am still waiting for the day when I mention this film to someone (in person) and they have half a clue as to what I'm talking about. Fantastic, unique film.

The Wicker Man (with Christopher Lee). Original cut only! Scariest non-horror film ever made. Ripped off constantly for decades. Atmosphere that just oozes off the screen. Not a lazy-day popcorn flick, thats for sure!

True Romance-  Tarentino wrote it.  Check out the cameos by Gary Oldman and Brad Pitt.  The "eggplant" scene with Hopper and Walken is priceless.

x2 for True Romance - one of my wife's favourite movies - let's not leave out the cameo for James Gandolfini either!

Your wife sounds interesting.  That ain't exactly a chick flick.  Not even close.

Manhunter, the original Red Dragon, which was a total waste of money.  I can't help but think that Edward Norton regrets doing that flick.  He brought zero intensity to the role.  See the original.  Directed by Michael Mann.   It has intensity in spades.

One False Move-  This has to be one of the most chillingest dramas ever.  Written by Billy Bob Thorton who plays in it also.  The plot do thicken.  Very good perfomances.

Barton Fink Directed By Joel Coen

One of my favorite movies of all time. So off-beat and unusually brilliant.

"Tender Mercies" - My all-time favorite. Robert Duvall even does his own singing AND wrote the songs as well.
"The Station Agent"
"You Can Count on Me" - good call Jim. I love the interactions between Terry and the kid.
"Wings of Desire" - by Wim Wenders.

LOL! That is too funny. I was just thinking that Barton Fink was the worst movie I have ever seen.

Different strokes I guess.

I just rented this.  I really liked it, but scary?  It made me wish I lived on a Scottish island with a bunch of pagans.  Okay, we can skip the woo woo, frog-licking and the human sacrifice, but naked girls jumping over campfires, sign me up for THAT.  The opening fly-by scenes are practically an advertisement for Scottish tourism!  Heh!

I then watched the trailer for the modern day remake.  Cripes almighty, it really showed how insanely more violent, screamy and crass movies are these days compared to the sixties.  Nicolas Cage must've punched like a dozen women in that trailer.  Sheesh!  Okay, so the modern day intensity and grime worked when they remade the Texas Chainsaw Massacre I'll admit.  (I know, blasphemy.  Put me in the Fango wickerman if you must)

"Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"

I guess a good follow up would be "Snatch"

Yeah, where is Madonna's husband these days?  I guess I might find it hard to think about work, too.

Blood Simple (the Coen Bros).
