I really liked it, but scary?

Many slices of scary out there...more of the "gradual, impending doom" type here...should have been more specific. But, glad you liked it.  8)

Don't know how in the rough they are but 2 to rent:
Run Lola Run
Memento

I second the Momento rec. Absolutely BRILLIANT film. Brain food.

i loved "run lola run", the first time i saw it a few years back. I again watched it with my wife recently, and was not exactly as pleased with the movie.
Memento OTOH .. is a classic.

I liked Mulholland Drive a lot as well. Very hard movie to decipher (atleast to me), but once u get a hang of whats going on, it'll keep you pinned in your seat till the end.

In that sense, yes.  Although the ending was a surprise to me, I didn't see it coming.  I thought some sort of weird supernatural or symbolic thing happened when he came out of the cave.  Mainly because  Christopher Lee had changed clothes in like five seconds and had no makeup on.  I also had trouble buying into the idea that the cop knocking out the guy and taking his costume could have been adequately planned by the townsfolk.  Other than that it made sense.

Yeah, if you saw Mulholland Drive, you know Naomi Watts was headed for bigger things.  That was a tour de force of a performance.  And speaking of things Mulholland, Mulholland Falls is nothing much to write home about except that the music in that sucker is gorgeous and it's so period like.  Copland is another movie with simply superb music.  And True Believer with James Woods (also a diamond, I think).  Great themes these.  So, has Basic Instinct.  Good music, that is.

"Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels"

I guess a good follow up would be "Snatch"

Two great films.

I'll add some more to the list. "Swingers" and "Made" are always good for a laugh and have decent soundtracks.

Listening to a new arrival I got right here on AC, La Revancha Del Tango, I thought of another lil off beat movie . . Assassination Tango.  The opening and closing scenes of the tango are to die for.  The movie is cool, too.

I must be on a hot streak here . . Basquiat.  Nice use of Miles Davis in this, too.

THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE (El Espinazo del Diablo) by Guillermo Del Toro

This Spanish language movie is easily as good as Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth which won 3 Oscars. He is currently scheduled to direct the two upcoming Hobbit films.

I love a lot of the movies being listed here.  But I guess I'm wondering what makes something "in the rough" here?

Some of my favorite films that didn't do huge box office numbers (and haven't already been mentioned):

Six Degrees of Separation
The Spanish Prisoner
Bulworth
The Usual Suspects
Return to Paradise
Lost Highway
Swimming with the Sharks
The Player

You sorta got it, Phil NY mothajumpin C!  Stuff that didn't do big box office or, more importantly, is worth seeking out.  To which I'll add add Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's funny, funny pictures.  Not to be too obscure or anything.  One thing about David Lynch I admire is his appreciation for the female body.  Thank You For Smoking is a very good smaller recent picture, IMO.  And for seedy character movies, a genre to it's own, probably, The Bad Lieutenant and City Of Industry.

The Wrong Box-  Totally.  Love this.  Bedazzled, too (not the latest version, please).

aa  The original Bedazzled (Peter Cook & Dudley Moore) is indeed a classic!  FWIW,Peter Cook's demonstration as Satan as to how he got kicked out of heaven is priceless.

Bloodly good for you, Zee.  I wish everyone here could appreciate this.  I get to So Cal, we'll laugh together.  And you could introduce me to Red Wine (you know what I mean, I wouldn't come empty handed) and your Omegas.

Oh Lucky Man.  Directed by Lindsey Anderson (If) and starring Malcolm MacDowell (Helen Mirren has a bit part).  An awakening.  Never been a movie like it.  Just made it to DVD.

Speaking of Helen Mirren, The Long Good Friday with Bob Hoskins as a London crime boss.

From Dusk Till Dawn (The Original) Robert Rodriguez's homage to Mexican Vampire Movies.  Cheech Marin as a pitchman enticing people into the club...(I can't think of a way to clean it up) that is just hilarious.  Salmya Hyak dancing wearing a snake and not much else; what more can you ask for?
Lonestar-A John Sayles Movie that has a killer soundtrack (see R&B thread)  Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Pena, Joe Morton, Chandra Wilson and more.  It has one of the best and funniest discussions about prejudice anywhere.
