Rick,

What subs will be used in this design? Will they be powered?

Thanks

Ryan

12" aluminum cone subs and powered for the prototypes. With this design there will be some flexibility due to it being modular.

I just finished up a new active design in a bubinga pomelle, not the typical waterfall pattern you see in bubinga normally... looks really great! let me see if i can figure out how to post a picture here to convince you how great the veneer is :)
I love using exotic veneers in all of my speakers.  If you are going to be spending over $1000 on fountek ribbons you might as well pay an extra $100-$200 for some gorgeous veneer!!! After all besides listening to them, half the fun is creating a work of art...

and a refresher on the mable burl for those who havent seen it on an array :)

Sounds very interesting! How many modules are you talking? It is very appealing to think lighter easier to move modules will assemble to become a good array! Will the modules stack, or be tall modules that stand side by side?

Justinc2, those are fantastic! Makes me wonder why I always get writer's cramp when I have the check in front of me and the guy at Houston Hardwoods quotes me a price for two sheets of exotic veneer versus the $44 cherry or birch.

Thanks, The cabinetry results are not perfect but I'm not a pro so I just try to get better and better each time while having fun.  If you dont mind working with raw veneer you would be amazed at the flitches you can find on ebay that are large enough to cover an array.  That bubinga I found was enough to cover those 2 towers and 2 matching subwoofer towers for about $100.  So depending how much you need per project you really might not be spending much more.  If the flitch is too much veneer you could always take what you need repackage the rest and sell it back on ebay.

The raw veneers are much harder to work than paperbacked  Im finding.  Compared to the maple the bubinga was very difficult when Ironing on.  It split quite a bit and pulled away at the seams where I spliced it.  I assume its because its such an open grained wood, but I really dont know too much about veneering so maybe it was technique.

Thanks for all of the input. I visited my cabinetmaker today and things are moving along. We decided to apply some really nice figured cherry that we had used on a previous set of speakers.

When can we get some progress pictures on these arrays?

Is there a link to where this was first proposed? What 3" are you talking about? Sure would like to know a little more about this array? Piano black sounds good to me!

Sorry I missed your post and am late in giving an answer. There will be two row of 3" HiVi woofers (16 per row) flanking eight Fountek ribbon tweeters. The arrays can be freestanding with separate subwoofers or placed on top of a subwoofer cabinet / base.

It will be awhile before I have any pictures but when I do I'll post them here.

By modular I meant separate arrays and subwoofers. The arrays can be freestanding or mounted on top of a subwoofer base.

Rick,
Think you mentioned you would have an outboard crossover option with this new line array.   What would the outboard crossover have as advantages over an internal crossover?

Rob S.

The main reason is to make it easier to transition to the active option. If a customer decides at a later point to go with a DSP unit like DEQX or TacT it's just a matter of removing the crossover box and attaching speaker wires directly to the speaker inputs.

Very Nice!!

Rick is this what you were planning on dimension wise, when you build it in NC?  looks to be 16 in or so wide in front and how deep in back?

Need to hear from this customer on how it sounds.

Those 3" are called "full range" by HiVi.
What's the Xover point on these and how low do they go?

Interesting implementation.

Rick ... they look great!   Two questions ...

(1) Why did you put the cones on opposite sides of the ribbons, rather than side by side with the ribbons on either the outer or inner edges?  I would have thought that keeping all the cones adjacent would minimize the CTC spacing and thus give a smoother response.

(2) How do these sound / compare vs. your other arrays?
