I'm definitely more partial to the female voice, but Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October - man has he got an interesting voice.

Who do you like / recommend in the way male vocalists?

Mark Murphy - Check out "The Latin Porter" and "Once to Every Heart".
The man is in his SEVENTIES but his voice is still like none other.

Here's a mixed bag:

Chet Baker, Corey Glover (of Living Colour) and, best of all, Stevie Wonder.

I agree with Greg Brown, just saw him and Bo Sat night, great show.
Also have to put in a plug for Robert Gordon and Kurt Elling.

I have Mark Murphy's Satisfaction Guaranteed.  Great male jazz singing can be heard here.  And while some of the arrangements are superb, really superb, not all gas me.  One album that does is Sinatra's Only The Lonely.  Pretty hard to top this record even today.  I like some Al Jarreau. too, and think Bobby McFerrin's version of Van Morrison's Moondance is positively it!  As in the one I would take to the proverbial desert island.  My only complaint is that it ends about 30 minutes too soon.

Ray LaMontagne shouldn't be able to. But he does. It's incredible stuff. Both records. "Trouble" and "Till the Sun Turns Black." Check em both and be amazed.

I tried to refrain from chiming in with operatic stuff but I can't help it.  You can't ignore the great operatic tenors and baritones if you want great vocals.  From the three tenors and Irish tenors back to Caruso, there are and have been some great voices.  I personally really like DiStefano, Del Monaco, Bjorling, Corelli, Kraus, Gedda, Gobi, Bergonzi, Domingo, Carreras, and Pavarotti to name a few.  Recently I heard a great voice in young bass-baritone Erwin Schrott singing Don Giovanni.  There are some promising young talents coming up in the operatic world.  A very good thing.
