There has been some discussion here about "near field" listening.  I have never been clear on what distances qualify.  Are you talking about 3 feet, 5 feet, 7 feet to the drivers???

I think 'nearfield listening' is not about distance from the speaker as such but that you and your speakers are at a listening position where the sound from any reflections from room surfaces arrives at your ears so far behind the sounds coming directly from the speakers that your brain ignores them. That is, your brain only allows you 'hear' the direct sounds.

This usually means moving you and the speakers away from walls. However, in my small room this is not practical without having the speakers next to my ears (which I haven't tried!) so I employ room treatment to try and prevent reflections, amongst other things.

So I'm a mid hall guy, I suppose.  My next moniker.

Gregg,

That is an interesting comment and one that is seldom discussed when "listening preferences" or system set up parameters are talked about.

It is certainly an element that can be addressed in set up and equipment selection.

I am a 5th row CENTER guy myself :green:

5th row, John? That's too close to the speakers for me. I suppose I'm more like a 10th row center kinda guy -- right between two gorgeous women with long legs. Makes for great visual performance as well.

Also, I don't care for the large concert hall sound. Too airy. Make it a small, intimate venue.

Yeah, having played in an Orchestra in grade school, I'd sit "IN" the Orchestra if I could.  I like to be "involved" in the music, and hear the immediacy of each instrument.

I even conducted (only in a school gym) a few times and it was an incredible sound.

Same at a Rock Concert.  I did a few tour dates (way back when) with the Beach Boys, and being Front Row Center and or "on stage" was a big treat.
