Off Bass

Recently while listening to my system in another room (system is in my living room and my office is in my bedroom) I became acutely aware of something I have known for years.

BASS in another room is D-E-E-P-E-R :o

Now of course part of this phenomena is that you do not get the balanced amount of full frequencies, but the other is that Bass seems to like to propagate over distance.

So again I am starting to experiment a bit.

I have 4 subs arranged in 2 pair, with the front pair being in phase and in an ITU semi-circle with the front mains, and the rear pair "right behind" my listening chair firing away from me and toward the rear wall.

I crossover at 30Hz (lowest setting on my NHT X-2) and run my RM40's -3db @24Hz) full range.

So as an experiment, I took about 40' of good 12g wire and move one of my subs out of the main room, down the hall, almost to my daughter's (who is away at school) room.  This is likely 20' plus feet away.

I switched the NHT to play "mono" bass below 30Hz and sat down to listen.

I have to say, there is a lot more "depth" to the bass, and and overwhelming sense of being "engulfed" by bass energy. :thumb:

It seemed to initially offer a much more realistic presentation. :green:

Of course I have "lots" of playing around to do, but overall it is a very interesting tweak.

Has anyone else tried anything like this?

I moved my original sub into my bedroom closet some months ago and love the result...the bass is indeed deeper & fuller. This is related to my HT set up.
Whereas before the sub was about just 5 feet(and firing right to left) away from my sitting position, now its about 11 feet away and firing left to right.
I have plans for a second sub positioned in my kitchen which is in the opposite direction of my bedroom to the front of my apt...wired for the push/pull effect like you have...now that should be some bad azz bass.
I have a very small apt...total length (front to back) of just 25 feet and 11-12 feet wide, with adjoining kitchen/bath (10'x7').

john, it sounds like you're getting a lot of room-loading effects from that corridor - it's kinda like a tube.  when you had the subs behind you, didja try pointing them at you, wired outta phase?

Hi Doug,

Yes, I have tried "hundreds" of combinations, for fun. Including the various "phase" hook ups. In corners, along the walls at various distances, facing walls, facing the ceiling, stacked on top of each other, back to back facing away from each other, 6" apart and facing each other (firing woofer to woofer)

I had remembered seeing that "outrageous" Subwoofer Cavern from some European site, where they actually built a large Transmission Line Horn "under" the listen room floor.

Then I got the bright idea to move "one of the four" subs quite a ways away, to see what allowing the wave "to form" might do.

What I haven't tried yet is placing all the subs in the middle of the room facing back to back forming a BASS CUBE.

That would make it like a single sub with Four 15" drivers, four 12" drivers, and four 15" Passive Radiators.

Koo Koo Ka Joo (said the Walrus)

If you search back, you will find many, many posts of some of those escapades.

That is absolutely insane. I've seen that before. I'd love to hear that system. Are there any reviews?

Unless that drumset is totally damped, it's gonna sing like a sumbitch and muck everything up.

Doug,

Do you know what frequencies that bass horn is tuned to??

Any idea on the power requirements??

I always thought that a well-tuned horn used a very small driver, but this one has 8 massive drivers in the compression chamber.
