Very interesting.  I wish the "download" option gave filetype and bitrate information.  20 FAQ and no file info.

I don't think this stunt sets the best precedence for other bands who want to self-publish.  Radiohead is a rich band but what about all of the  struggling artists who want to self-publish?  Radiohead can probably sell a few thousand $82 box sets to offset expenses but not a lesser known band.  I also predict we'll see Radiohead back on a studio label for their next release.

Overall this comes across as a pompous stunt from an increasing pretentious band.

Am I the only one that thought the website was kinda lame?  Made me feel like I was back in my Commodore 64 days or something.

All the complaints aside, we ALL need to buy this.

Seriously.  I don't care if you don't even go download it, but buy it.  It's the one thing you can do to stick it to these assholes.

I bought the boxed set the day it hit Radiohead.com (this past Monday morning).  I'm a huge fan.  Bonnaroo 2006 was a lifetime experience....and they played five songs that will end up on the new set.  There aren't too many days that go by without at least a little Radiohead music in my life.

Here's a nice rundown (with live Video and audio downloads) of most of the songs on the album.  They've been playing many of these throughout the last tour, and some (Nude, etc) since OKC days.

The comments are amazing!  I think the entitlement mentality is fascinating, but it's a symptom of the society we live in, and thanks to ever-growing governments in the Western world, it's not going anywhere.

Do you get the impression that some of those comments were written BY record companies?!?!

I feel slighted.

I went and bought the CD the first opportunity I got, and I paid regular CD price b/c I was going to teach the bastard RIAA a lesson.

But I guess I am the one learning a lesson.

I got the e-mail today with the download link, and it's only 160Kbps MP3's.

So I paid CD price expecting all the bits.  Now I want an 85% refund, since I'm only getting 15% of my bits.  It's really pissing me off.  I thought this would be a positive all around, but it's not.

Well it really wouldn't bother me if it had been disclosed up front about the missing bits.  But then I would have adjusted my price to reflect what I'd pay for MP3's (like $0.99 a song), and not what I'm willing to pay for all their bits.

B,
In all the forums I frequented abou this it was very clear that the download was lossy MP3, and stated on numerous press releases.  It's not a cd, it's an MP3 download...to whet the appetitie until the boxed set and the regualr cd's are released.  Hence their "pay what you want" stance.

I should have investigated more.  I went off the press releases and the website (which mentioned nothing about the formatting).

Anyone else download it today? I got it first thing this morning, the download just took a few seconds and my only complaint is the low quality of the files. To have to listen to Radiohead's & Nigel's work in 160kbps files is a shame but it least it will hold me over until my box set arrives. Anyway I've only listened to it once but so far I like.

Check out this Pampelmoose website.  They covered this a few days ago.  Trent / Nine Inch Nails just joined the free agent - download direct to consumer path.

I'm in the same boat... but I look forward to listening to it in my main rig (even though it is compressed)!  I bought the box set as well  aa

I shelled out for the box set too, but it's nice to have the mp3's to listen to now!
