Mini-Gathering for New Members - NOW WITH PICS!!
« on: 5 Sep 2007, 03:39 am »
Hiya Guys,

Thought I'd toss this one out there and see if there was any interest. I'm thinking about having a mini-gathering (mainly) for the 'new' guys that haven't made it out before. Of course, anybody that wants to come is welcome but I thought it would be a good chance for the the newer members to give a listen to some different equipment. If you aren't familiar with my gear, click on my system links below and you can see it in my Gallery. Not looking to do lots of gear swapping, just sort of a meet and greet and then let you have at go at my systems.

I was thinking about either Saturday Sept 29th or Saturday Oct 6th.

Let me know first if you are interested and next, which date works out best.

Again, if any of the regulars want to come out at the same time, you are more than welcome to join in  :thumb:

Not 100% sure yet, but Sept 29th should work better for me.  I'm looking forward to hearing your gear, and having my negative pre-conceptions squashed :)

Scott, I wouldn't mind tagging along if you don't mind having "not so much of a new GAS guy" in your digs.
I'll have to confirm with the boss 'we' don't have any plans, on whatever date is chosen, but I'd love to come out if you don't mind one more chair filled.
Also, don't forget Decfest is on the 5th, 6th and 7th.....Just in case anyone forgot.

Hey lofreek, the time is wide open right now. We could go from (say) 3 until late in the evening since you are gigging.

Bob, absolutely, come on out theres lots of room for more people  :thumb:

Turbo, no worries about your preconceptions. I think you'll find my main rig is really easy to listen to. Since I use a Lowther for 150Hz and up, I think you'll find it is a really nice sounding (and detailed and natural) arrangement. As you've probably read, Lowthers are very directional with a small sweet spot so don't judge too harsh until you get the 'good' seat. The treble does roll off on these drivers at around 12-14k though. I don't use a super tweeter but there is still plenty of 'air' and 'shimmer' to the sound. Oh, and there is no lacking for bass in the system with my 15's. I really think you will like the sound, most people do. It's quite different...but quite good too.

Hey Scott,

If I ever get around to purchasing my tickets, I should be in town for a few days around the 29th.  Mind if an out-of-towner stops by for a bit?  Also depends upon how far along I get on my "honey do" list though.

Well I am excited to hear your rooms, and all the different setups.  They should be new experiences for me, I've never even heard a really good vinyl setup.  I'll do my best to listen with an open mind :)  I'll tell you exactly what I think if you want me to, or just keep my mouth shut if you don't.

Man, I'll tell you what.... I was sitting in Scott's 'sweet spot' one day listening to a song I've never heard before (Muddy Waters???? Maybe???) and I was melting into the chair hearing the wonderful sound.
Lo and behold, I look over and see a turntable spinning.  :o I asked, "Is THAT what I'm listening too??"
"Yes". Was the reply. 8)
Amazing
It was the Consonance Teardrop (if memory serves).
It ALMOST made me sell my truck in exchange for a turntable.  :nono:
(That would have had a very low WAF)

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Sure, come on by. We allow Texacans in the house

Turbo, no worries. That's the thing about audio, just like women, what turns me on likely may not float your boat. We'll see though. Who knows, maybe the system will draw you into the dark side  :green:

Well since I haven't been to anything since Christmas I guess this makes me new again :D
I actually could do either.
I will wait and see how the schedule shakes out and if I can swing it I am there!

thanks for the invite Scott.  I may bring a friend over who's brand spanking new to all this crazy stuff.  He may not know what he's in for.

Chris, that works just fine. Just remind him that you don't need to spend a gozillion bucks to get great sound. The Odyssey system is proof of that one. And then there is that little factory modified JoLida 102B.  :thumb:

Well I have been doing some tube cyber-shopping lately Scott :)  I did just order a tube DAC too.

I might, if you want, have something pretty darn cool that I could bring over that weekend.  I'm putting together a speaker to take to RMAF and run in Chris' BPT room ... think waveguide loaded ScanSpeak 6600 AirCirc and Seas W22EX mag cone open baffle, probably a Focal 10W for some extremely musical bottom-end

Jamie,

We're going to do it the 29th. Since lofreek is gigging in the afternoon, I thought we could start a little later, say around 3:00 and go well into the evening. If you are tied up late afternoon, feel free to come by earlier.  :thumb:

Hey Turbo, be sure to bring your tube DAC. That will be easy to roll in to any of the systems. Your speakers are a different story. In my two big rooms, the speakers that are in there now take a small army to move plus in the Blue room its being powered by 8 watts and the Redrum has 12 watts. Not sure those amps will mate well with your new designs.

Tell you what though, when I take the Altecs down, I'd love to hear them in front of my Radii's (75wpc EL34's).  :green:

I could bring one of my 600wpc ICEpower amps too, they're small and easy to move ... although I know you said you didn't want to do much gear swapping :)  Heck, I'll just load up all sorts of goodies and we can play with whatever, or none of it.

I still have a lot of work to do on these open baffle waveguides, but I really hope to have them ready to listen to by the 29th.  They'll be going to RMAF in the BPT booth ... if they turn out good.  So some extra ears would be a huge help!

You can lug 'em over to my place if you want.  I'd love to hear them in my room.    Still breaking in an amp and the statement SB3 but by the 29th, they should have close to 500 hours on them.

Thanks for the offer, I'll definately take you up on that ... even if I take 'em over to Scott's place as well.  If I'm going to build something for RMAF, with the possibility of it evolving into a commercial design in the future, I would very much need input from other trained ears.  And your room will definately help show what they're capable of much better than mine!
