Exodus Speaker Kits..... the end!
« on: 6 Aug 2007, 05:39 pm »
The first generation Exodus Speaker Kits have officially come to an end.    I don't have a source for the Adire Audio Extremis which they are based upon so they have officially been pulled from the market.

It was a good run.... wish it wasn't so but such is life.

Later this year the second generation will follow and I'm making 100% sure that we have stable supply sources for all parts used.

Hi All
I am guessing that I am like most people who visit here.  Sometimes it can be years between deciding you want something and making a purchase.  I guess you have to bite the bullet if you are serious, otherwise you might miss out.
Cheers

Are the replacement kits going to use proprietary Exodus-branded drivers or something more off the shelf (and hence available)?

The midwoofer is proprietary, hence our own.

Actually from my standpoint that is preferable to an off-the-shelf woofer because I can control availability.   There is nothing to stop a vendor from dropping or changing a product once its released.   Its a frequent problem that vendors change the measured spec's on off-the-shelf products.    They just don't do you the courtesy of changing the product name and letting you know.

That cerntainly doesn't make running a business easy. Too bad. At least you're now in control... except for the tweeter ;). Do you have something else up your sleeve?

Too true. My immediate concern was the idea of having drivers that go out of release again, though you're right in that the big vendors usually don't bother telling you about manufacturing variances and production changes, and there's no guarantee that some Vifa "Brand X" woofer will be available next year either.

On the other hand, it's hard to compete with well-known and effective products like the Seas tweeters (e.g. 27TBFCG). But if you do use standard parts, then you have people trying to knock off your kit design and now you're selling nothing but plans, which stinks.

I just am wondering what the new systems will look like in terms of parts. I never did get around to building an Exodus kit due to pricing on the 3-ways (and cash flow), but I'd still love a 3-way with the WR125's and a couple solid woofers. Ooooh.... and put it on top of a bass bin with a Shiva-X in it. Is this speaker porn?

Nothing up my sleeve in terms of a tweeter.   We where looking at a proprietary unit but it just didn't pan out.

I have other things up my sleeve but they are neither cheap nor easy.    They require a lot more design & engineering work on my side than does a simple cookie-cutter passive loudspeaker design.   Ultimately the only way they make sense is because they are designed as a tool for a much bigger market.    They wouldn't be cost effective at all if I where just developing them for my loudspeaker line.    In fact, I wouldn't be doing a loudspeaker line period if I where making decisions based upon dollars and cents.

In my mind... I'm trying to do the best design possible with the parts that available to me in modest quantities.    I also consider supply and consistency so there are a number of variables you are always juggling.    There is no possible way that I can guarantee with 100% accuracy that a given vendor isn't going to fold.   You just make the best decisions with the information at hand.

I'm not doing a three way right now.... and pricing on the new kits will be higher than the old.    I've pretty much thrown price out the door as a design consideration.    Don't get me wrong... they won't be Wilson Watt prices but they will be expensive in relation to most kit loudspeakers.
