If you remember the cool VSAC (Valve state of the art conference) held up near Seattle in 2003, and were wondering if it was ever coming back, the answer is yes!  It will be here in Vancouver, Washington (5 minutes from downtown Portland Oregon) next year for Memorial Day weekend at the new Hilton hotel.

As fate would have it, it is only about 10 minutes away from the TONE Audio hq!

Doc Bottlehead himself called me the other day to ask if we would be interested in participating and sponsorship and I immediately jumped on the bandwagon.  I talked to the people that are putting on the show and they are very nice. Don't know a ton of particulars just yet, but we will be meeting with them as soon as the new issue is put to bed next weekend.

Stay tuned here for news as I get it.

I hope to meet as many AC members as possible. We will try and plan a lot of fun stuff and there are a lot of great record stores just across the bridge in Portland.  Perhaps a days tour?  If you can make it to the Pacific Northwest next year, we'd love to see you....

Great New. Now I don't need to cross the scary Narrows bridge to get to the location.

We're (she who must be obeyed) and I are thinking about coming out for this one too. My wifes brother lives in Beaverton Waldport (right off 101) so it gives us a good chance to pay him a visit at the same time. Plane fare is pretty reasonable too :green: Might just make this one for a change  :thumb:

Scott:

Tell your wife that VSAC is actually being put on by a very nice LADY and her husband....
She used to run trade shows for the software industry, so I'm getting a feeling these
people are very professional.

They both mentioned that they are going to try and organize a few day trips for the
ladies that could care less about hifi, so the wives and girlfriends can have a good
time while we geek out!!  That will make it that much easier to get your wife to come
back!!

I'll know a lot more next week after we get the issue done!  Looking forward to
seeing you here!

Thats great news Jeff. I'll be sure and let the little woman know.

Guessing, we'll probably hang out for a few extra days after the show and take in the area. Besides my brother-in-law, I've got a cousin that lives in Seattle that I haven't seen in a couple of years (he was one of the designers back at Speakerlab back in the 70's) plus I really want to drive part of the coastal highway and then make a trip into mountains to hang out for a while. Who knows, maybe even venture up into Vancouver BC and take in a Jazz club or two.

It all sounds like too much fun  :green:

Jeff,

That is great news.  I attended a couple of the early VSAC shows years ago where I first got exposed to Bottlehead, AtmaSphere amps, Merlin speakers, mods and tubes that I continue to be addicted to today.  Plus, the thought of making the trek from the NW to RMAF/CO in winter is a bit too much for my current abilities.

This sparks an idea, or question.  Are there any local PDX/SW WA Audio societies?  I recall hearing of the early days of the Positive Feedback gang starting in this manner, but it disbanded and morphed in to its current state before I got bit by the Audiophile bug.  This might be a way to build more local interest,  support (and volunteers).   With your great Tone publication, PF, Modwright, Jena Labs, Echo Audio, Audio Gallery, Pearl Audio, Audiomod, Triad, Empircal Audio, ASC, etc all in the general stump town area it seems like some kind of society could exist.

I look forward to hearing more about the big event.

Scott F. - Speakerlab... wow, that brings back fond memories of the late 70's and my initial exposure in high school to really nice hi-fi sounds.  Speakerlabs and Klipsch held a cult like status in my little circle of friends.  It was typically the friends with older brothers that had the dough to buy the nice separate stereo  components, and old enough to buy the adult beverages for the parties...

Is Speakerlab still around?

I think Speakerlab is still out there. Last I saw they were doing distributed sound and in-wall/ceiling speakers.

Boy that's been a long time ago.

My mother in law is from Mt. Angel and my wife still has tons of cousins in Portland area.  We have been meaning to go back there some time and this could work.  I wouldn't mind playing Pumpkin Ridge again either.  Keep us posted Jeff.

BTW, Mt. Hood is not going to below up any time soon, is it?

If anyone is coming out for Washington sightseeing and wants to do two of the prettiest drives you're ever likely to have in your life, definitely check out Washington Pass which goes from Rockport to Winthrop and the Sea to Sky Highway which connects Vancouver and Whistler.

Oops - Washington Pass won't be open Memorial Day - too much snow.   :duh:

Both of these are a haul but could easily be made part of a destination trip.

There are a few things to do and see around PDX/Vancouver;

The area is a growing mini wine country, both to the south (Mt Angel), sw (Willamette Valley, McMinnville, Dundee) and up the Columbia River Gorge to the east.  The local music scene and venues are also usually worthwhile.  I just saw The Gossip (A+) last week and spotted Peter Buck and Mike Mills of REM.  Lots of Jazz, rock and indie stuff going around.  Hey - maybe some live music for VSAC as well?

Plus, I think we got to be in the top tiers of number of places per capita of restaurants, coffee bars and strip clubs.  No excuses for watching standard def brain dead TV...

Great news, once you have a banner email it on over and I'll be happy to post it on the website and in each issue.

For those of you looking for side trips, Mount St. Helens is fascinating.  Fort Clatsop (Lewis and Clark) is just 2 hours away, and Seattle iis only 3 hours to the north.  Plenty of things to do.

Jeff,

Looking forward to your panel discussion on Music Servers this weekend at VSAC.  What time / day are you scheduled to conduct it?  It didn't see it noted on the website.

Thanks,
Ken
