I think we might be cut from the same mold, as I have looked extensively into both active speakers AND cd players with digital inputs. Two that I am aware of:
California Audio Labs, model is CL-15 (I think). If the model is wrong, just keep searching around, it is a single drawer unit that has volume control. Special orders could request balanced outputs. Unfortunately, no longer made.
Mark Levinson, can't remember the #, maybe the 39 or 390 or 390S?. I believe there was an original version and also their updated version which is still in production. Like the CAL, is single disc, has volume control, and I think all versions had balanced outputs.
My plan was to get the Levinson, run a music server into the Levinson's digital inputs, and run the balanced
outs directly to active speakers. Kind of pricey for me though so I have to wait.
